Elite Hybrids instead of stock tightens up its mix
As if the Elex already out paces the Sennheiser 650 and other rivals...
a great way to skew the graphs even more is by applying a little compression with the Elite Hybrids (since the surrounding surface area being covered, and the fuzzy material against your ears keeping your ears comfy as well) is a great compromise between achieving an open soundstage and isolation for lower frequencies to resonate into a punchy profile.
the sheepskin and fenestrated models are a little too heavy on heating the ears and allowing the protrusion of soundwaves seeping outwards. Some prefer it to the stock and you are getting what you pay for, but the options Drop provides are too bountiful when it comes to customizing your speakers, so I have to side with what sounds right to me
Comfort: On par with Focal pads. Dekoni Velour pads are slightly firmer but it's nothing to worry about.
Sound: Mid-frequency has tad bit more energetic (i.e. a forward sound) and soundstage consequently become narrower. The effect won't overwhelmingly skew your listening but the difference is enough to notice. Bass seems to reverb/reflect, which degrades separation. I guess this is why inside of original Focal Elex pads are partially lined with fine mash fabric to absorb Bass reflection. Overall, sound changes from relaxed to slightly forward sound. By any means, this is not aggressive/forced sound, though.
Built Quality: Stitching is consistent across all seems. Shapes are uniform. Brackets snap nicely.
Conclusion: For the price, I think these pads are well worth. Sound-wise, if you enjoy relaxed sound signature of Focal Elex, I recommend you to stick with the original pads.
My audio chain: Spotify on laptop > Schiit Modius > Schiit LYR2 / THX 789
I like these - they are more comfortable than the original pads (the fenestrated sheepskin feels better) and, with a little work, they sound better. The problem is the holes are too small so there is too much reflected sound in the midrange. I reamed them out with a 1.6mm drill bit and that did the trick. Now vocals sound fuller and more realistic - without the sporadic missing frequencies of the stock pads. Bass is well controlled and in balance.
Mine did not come with the removal tool either - I used a plastic paddle from a single serve ice cream container and that worked perfectly.
I bought the dekoni velour pads for my elex. the foam is a bit denser than the stock pads which will increase the clamp force slightly. Overall the sound is a bit on the warmer side compared to the stocks pads.
On the clear, this will even out the treble and the sound signature is even better than the stock pads. Highly recommended.
Workmanship is sloppy to the point of them being misshapen, and the removal tool noted in the description was not included. Looking at the discussions, my experience is not unique.
I contacted Dekoni, and heard back from the Founder and Creative Director. He replied that they don't make pads for my Focal Elex and Utopia.
Okay...
I picked up the elite hybrids and they are shockingly even more comfortable than the stock pads (which were already amazing). These definitely changed the sound quality (IMO) to reduce the brightness on the top end (good when paired with the 789), add warmth, better bass, and clearer mids. Very happy with my purchase.
Excellent product - the perforated pads seem to make the Elears and bit more neutral and less bass-focused. They are also as comfortable as the OEM pads from Focal (if not more so).
I have the Elite Velour and the Elite Hybrid versions. Using them with my Elegias. For my taste, the stock pads still win a bit here and there. The Velour pads lose a lot of bass response while adding more breath to music. The Hybrids sound more like the original ones. The bass is still there but I feel like there are some sibilants in my music now.
So at the moment I'm keeping the default pads :)
