I own an Explorer and strongly endorse the device. I solo backpack year round, and it's a critical piece of gear, not just as a rescue device but as a communication device. I've never needed to be rescued, but I'm often late or change my hiking plans, and this allows me to communicate with friends and family so no one worries or sends help after me. The device interface is okay, but it pairs with a smartphone app, which provides a better interface and also allows you to use it as a GPS map and navigator.
Technically, it's been flawless - it does exactly what it's supposed to do and I've never had a problem. Relaibility, signal and battery life are all excellent. My criticism is that the Explorer doesn't have enough internal memory to load base maps, so any map display on the screen is pretty useless. Also it's clunky to send messages from the keypad. You HAVE to pair it with a smartphone with the Delorme app in order to use it as a GPS navigator, or to type messages at more than 4 words per minute. This requires that you carry an additional piece of equipment (smartphone), which is problematic for ultralight hikers.
Also, the monthly plan is expensive (but a worthwhile insurance policy, if you ask me).
I used one of these in Nepal last year after the earthquake while doing some aid work. Our small team gave me their emergency POC's name/phone/email, and then I was able to add all of them to my daily updates. I did an update in the am, and one in the pm, and also if there was a big aftershock (we were there for the 7.something one...not fun!). I only turned it on when I used it, it was off when I didn't need to use it. Battery lasted over a week before needing a charge. Oh, and Delorme saw that I was posting from Nepal and ended up refunding me the $65 for the month I paid.
They also featured a story I wrote about using the inReach for relief efforts here: https://blog.delorme.com/2015/09/10/providing-disaster-aid-in-nepal-one-trail-ambassadors-experience/
I would consider one of these if it used regular AAA batteries like all my other backpacking electronics. A dead internal rechargeable battery would make this just dead weight in my pack.
RMC0109Used it for 9 days, but didn't have it on until I needed it.
It only went through 50% of the charge.
Also, it uses micro usb for charging which is compatible with my portable chargers and solar panel.
HikerMEFrom what I can tell, @HikerME, Delorme is still operating fairly independently of Garmin. Yes, Garmin bought them out, but I think that it'll take the rest of 2016 for them to plan the transition/integration. On the plus side for us, now that we're working with Delorme, we will have a better chance of working with Garmin! That would really be great to have drops for Garmin watches and GPS units.
Good drop. I own one and use it to keep in touch with family on hiking trips. All of the points here are really good.
I'll add that I don't particularly think the Explorer version is worth the premium. Sure it's a GPS map device, but it's on a screen that is slightly larger than a postage stamp. It's impractical as a navigation device.
You can actually use it to get your location on the Earthmate app on your phone I believe. Earthmate also lets you send text messages through the unit without having to use the arrow keys and a visual keyboard to type slower than hell. So really, you need to have a phone to make the most out of the unit.
If you have a paper map, set the SE to UTM coordinates and under "location" on the second page of the menu it'll give you your UTM coordinates. You can cross reference on a map.
In other words, save the 70 bucks and get the SE version.
