Still love my AH-D2000s (easy to drive, super fun listen) but it’s nice to see Denon give the old line a snazzy update.

johnnylarueSame, I'm still using my D2000 also. And I came sooooo close to buying the D5200 a few times but then something always happens and I end up not pulling the trigger. Today I decided to go for Audio Technica ATH-WP900 then this pops up on Drop. 😂

KulpaMay I ask how you modded it? I also got Rosewood cup from Emu on my D2000 but to my ears I think the plastic cup had better sound stage, imaging and sub bass. So I end up swapping it back to stock (plastic cup). Did you end up using the stock D2000 ear pad?

HydeHello, take a look at this page, my pseudonym is Deleeh.I described everything there.Back then I bought the headphones cheaply on Ebay, the original pads were no longer on them.I then bought some that was also suggested in this forum. The Ahg Pads. https://forum.hifiguides.com/t/drop-discontinuing-fostex-tr-x00-line/6178/718

Kulpalol actually that link link to a different post, I had to scroll back quite a bit but eventually found it. https://forum.hifiguides.com/t/drop-discontinuing-fostex-tr-x00-line/6178/519 But nice now I see how it was done, I think I have all the parts at different time but can't say for sure that I've tried them all together at the same time. Since I've had D2000, E-Mu Teak, Rosewood cup, and Lawton Mods for a long time but the D2000 stock pads broke so it wan't until fairly recently that I got TH610 pads as replacement. Might need to revisit it again at a later time. Thanks!

johnnylarueI still love my AH-D600s. They are ugly, heavy but continue to sound very very sweet

HydeThe D2000 does what it does so well that it’s hard to really want to mess with it too much. (That sub bass...!) Great phones for electronic music, or even for flattening out the vocal mix for singers who think too highly of their voices. ;)

johnnylarueHello, Yes, I don't know what Denon did with the D2000, but I can also say that the bass on this model is truly legendary. Before i bought the D2000 i bought the D7200 and thought boar is the best, but when i heard the D2000 without doing anything to it, i noticed how hard it is with the D7200, where the bass bleeds into the mids and when the rosewood cups came into the D2000 boar, i couldn't stop being amazed. But you only notice that when you have both of them in front of you. although it's so old it's still my favorite. actually you should put it back on the market with a few improvements to the frame and headband then it would probably be the best headphone. and everyone who had the D2000 always says the same thing. one of the best headphones besides the D5000, although the D5000 didn't sound as good as the D2000.

HydeHello, Ah sorry, that's right I didn't take that into account in the form. Um yes it's a bit like that the headphones are really very good and Fostex and so on. But they are quite picky about the pads. Which is not a disadvantage, because you can be so flexible. But the market is a little bit saturated with them. From the cheap pads from China it makes no sense. Dekoni did not convince me with their pads except the Attunion rings. there is still Zmf but again expensive and to test a little bit of money. degrees from overseas come additional costs. that's why I stayed with the Ahg pads. Try it out at the occasional time, 😉.

KulpaYeah I think back then I tried modding it for 2-3 years but in the end I find every time something gets better you sacrifice something else. The adjustments are surprisingly sensitive lol. I have tried the following: Lawton Driver Damping - Making it more V shaped, increasing treble detail and bass quantity but recess vocals a little bit. Imaging feels less natural if that makes sense. Lawton Cup Damping - Lined the inside of the cup essentially convert any wood cup into "Lawton Cup" sound, not bad but sounded a bit flat. Rosewood Cup - V shaped cup, though treble is actually not too sharp compared to Teak/Mahogany, deep bass. But plastic cup is still deeper. Bamboo Cup - Accentuate female vocal, treble gets a bit sharp. A little bit echoey sounding however imaging isn't as accurate. Good bass. As a whole I actually quite enjoyed it despite some minor flaws. TH900 Pad - Very comfortable and roomy, emphasize trebles but loss of bass quantity and quality. TH-X00 Pad - Balanced sounding, vocal is good but not good for sound stage. TH610 Pad - In my opinion out of everything I've tried this has closest sound to D2000 stock ear pad. Ear opening a little bit wider than TH-X00 pad, sound stage is better, treble a bit sharper, and sub bass a bit deeper. This is what I end up using after my stock pad broke/worn out. Dekoni Pad - I've tried the pleather one, leather one, and hybrid one. The pleather one is closest but I still didn't like it as much as stock for TH610 pad. I've also tried the attenuation ring without good results. I've also since tried TH-X00 Mahogany/Ebony, E-Mu Teak, and ultimately come back to D2000. LOL at this point I'm like maybe I did something wrong or maybe you need a very magical combination of things to make it work. But I've since restored it back to stock setting for now which I find it's a nice balance of things also the sound stage and imaging just feels natural. I might attempt it again someday, for now I'll just keep enjoying the stock experience haha (except using TH610 pad since it's impossible to find stock pads anymore). Oh I also ordered ATH-WP900 (was gonna go D5200, but figure I'd give something different a try), while it might not be apples to apples but I'll see how it goes later lol.

HydeNope nevermind WP900 is too V shaped and resolution and detail is more or less the same as D2000 but just a bit different. But D2000 definitely is more linear and cover more ranges and different genres of music better. I don't know if D2000 is too good or diminishing returns hits hard at that level. I like my D2000 ($300 CAD) better than the WP900 ($1000 CAD). I think I should probably stick to D5200 for my next upgrade.

johnnylarueI have an old pair I got for cheap because the headband/pads/cups were trashed. Fixed them up with a new headband, new pads, scored some TH900 cups off Ebay, and did a removable cable mod. They have a permanent place on my desk next to my AKGs for everyday use now.
