Here is the result of my DIY project.
https://youtu.be/fVpnW30hxRw
I removed the cover (air flow from the air pump) at 10:06 min so you can see how the top finished on its own after two minutes or so.
This Tornado Top completed my collection of spinners and tops and provided a stunning display of a perpetual spinning top under the acrylic dome.

Dalton_BissellHi Dalton, thank you for creating this awesome Tornado top. Your design is flawless 'cause the top keeps on spinning as long as the air pump is pumping air.
Cheers!
dtw898How long did you let it spin for before stopping it?

Dalton_BissellI never stop it. The air pump is always on and your Tornado is always spinning. The only way the Tornado top will stop is when there is a black out or air pump becomes defective. As of now, the Tornado top is still spinning since I posted the video here.
Even when I open the dome to retrieve one of the spinner to play with, there is more than enough time for the Tornado to keep spinning before I put the dome back on.
That is why I stated that your design is flawless.
Thanks!
dtw898That is awesome! You are awesome! I'm gonna check up on this again in a few weeks... I love it!
Dalton_BissellYour work is pretty awesome too.

dtw898Still spinning?
dtw898Hey there, I was wondering how this was going... is that TTP still spinning? I wonder if that's a world record.

Dalton_BissellIt sure is. I'm actually thinking of taking another video with better lighting. Check back next time to see the new video. Thanks for remembering!

Dalton_BissellHi Dalton,
Below is an updated video of my DIY project. Enjoy!
https://youtu.be/prV9zFIcvhU?t=3
Uploaded on Apr 20, 2017 I used better lighting for this version. I shot it for about 30 minutes so you know this can go on and on without stopping unless the air pump stops working. At 4:35 min. on the video, I removed the cover (air flow from air pump) and viewed the Tornado Top directly from above so you can see from a different perspective.
dtw898Something is wrong with your video link, and I want to see it! Try again please!

Dalton_BissellDalton, here is another version you may like as well. Enjoy!

Published on May 7, 2017 This is a 30 minutes stationary shot of the Dalton Tornado Top. If you like watching spinning top that doesn't stop spinning for 30 minutes, this video is your option. Enjoy!
dtw898I believe your Tornado top has the most spin time total, even more than the first one I ever made! Incredible. I wonder if the contact point will ever start to wear out. It's replaceable most of the time, so if it did just let me know.

Dalton_BissellAre you referring to the most spin time total based on the longevity of the contact point? If you are, did you use ruby on your first one? If not, the choice of using ruby for this version should last quite awhile since Swiss watch used ruby in their mechanical system as well. However, I appreciate your offer and will certainly let you know when the ruby wore out.
Thanks for the great Tornado spinning top! It has been spinning non-stop ever since I set it up under the air dome.
dtw898Yep, I was thinking exactly that. My very first one didn't have a bearing, and it is flat now lol. Next one was straight to ruby, it still works perfectly.

Dalton_BissellYour original question prompted to me add a drop of lubricating oil on the lens the Tornado Top is spinning on due to the fact that even my Swiss watch needed to be lubricated annually by the authorized service department. Guess what, the top is no longer spinning on a single point. It is now moving around a bit more which provides a more interesting visual effect if I'm looking at it.
When I've time, I'll shoot another video to show what I mean.
Thanks for the question!

Dalton_BissellHere you go. Enjoy!
I placed a tiny drop of lubrication on the lens and the top is now twirling around a spot instead of spinning on a fixed spot. Btw, once the lubricator is dried up, the top settled down to spinning on a fixed spot.
Also, I saw no wear and tear on the ruby. I think this ruby will outlast me due to the fact that it is harder than the lens it is spinning on.

dtw898Is this still spinning!? I just saw the drop is live again and thinking about getting one. Which version did you get? I can't tell if it's one of the coated versions or not since it's always spinning in your videos!

HegsHi there, I believe mine is the raw version with the ruby tip. Unfortunately, my old air pump lasted only about six months in keeping the Tornado top spinning. I'm sure if I replace the air pump, the top will just keep on spinning. There is no wear and tear on my Tornado top as far as I can tell. Enjoy and Cheers!

dtw898Awesome, thanks for your quick reply! I am wondering if I put a small spin station in the middle of a computer fan if that will draw enough air down through the top to keep it spinning.

HegsUnfortunately, the air from computer fan is too disperse to have any strength to push the "heavy" Tornado spin. Only the highly focused stream of air from the air pump has the ability to slice through the Tornado to keep it spinning. Remember, the air pump needs to have the strength to force the air through the water to make bubbles; luckily, this same force can spin the Tornado as well too.

dtw898Thanks for the nice info! Unfortunately I forgot about this at the end of the week and missed it this time. Hope it comes back again. @Dalton_Bissell makes a good looking top!
