FWIW, I bought 3 of these (green, red, blue) several years back, mainly to raise slurry on coticule stones. Just thinking out loud but 600 grit for knife sharpening duties is a bit coarse for a final edge, even for a pocket knife but that's just me. I would use 600 to rid the edge of nicks if they weren't too deep, go coarser for deeper nicks, gouges, then finish with 1200
That said, I'm a huge fan of keeping my edges in good shape, not using a knife for a task it wasn't meant for, which means I don't nick them up much. I keep most of my edges going using black, white and green crayons on leather bonded to wood (strop). Check out Stropman's 4 stroke strop. The black and white is great for getting rid of the fin (both are cutters) created when using syn stones, then the green is a final polish. Others may have better and different ideas
shakin_jakeMy god man, I don't know what you mean by this: "...mainly to raise slurry on coticule stones" but its sounds really important, so if this is the tool you chose to do that... whatever disgusting, but amazingly important job, I'm in!
On the other hand... I have about a dozen knife sharpeners already, and was taught to sharpen knives as a child with a simple stone, so maybe I'm out. Also, as others stated, you can find these readily for less, even get all three for $5 more. Anyone know why this company doesn't make a course grit on one side, and a medium grit on the other?
I do love the credit card size and slim profile with metal body so it won't break, if I only had one all-purpose sharpener for backpacking/travel, this would probably be it. BUT, again as others have asked, does it come with the way cool business/credit card holder? If so, I think it justifies the slight price increase, and I'm once again in the likely 'In!' category.
I have discovered that simple sand paper is the absolute best for ultra light weight, carry with you, put on a razor edge sharpener, ever. That is if you don't carry a ceramic coffee mug and just use the bottom of the mug. Or have a vehicle window nearby and just use the upper edge of the window. Honestly if I were also carrying a machete (yes, we are not drifting into machete land.... LOL), or a small hatchet/axe, I'd prefer a hand file to get the edge back, then something like this card to get it 'sharp' again.
Last point... I received the Silent Hero knife (from TOPS) yesterday, and I love, lOvE, LOVE it! This sharpen sure would keep it cutting paper. Your milage may vary. :D
Bonus points to anyone that can name every item in this photo (most, if not all are sold on Massdrop; and funny enough
