I've heard this is pretty brutally hard. Anyone who plays a lot of D&D have experience with this? Does it play more like an RPG or a card game?

That's my experience w/ Wrath of Ashardalon. I asked the same thing about D&D board/ card games. Seems they tend towards difficult. I've played without a few mechanics in that to make it survivable.
