My biggest gripe with the V1 was the excessive heat from the amp. V2 runs very cool. I like that it now has a manual standby. The included cord for V2 is excessively long IMHO, ;). I really don't understand why people complained about it. Just cut it in the middle and make it what ever length you need. To fully appreciate these BMR speakers they should be around arms length distance. Also, I had ordered the grills for my V1 and only use them as a dust cover. They noticeably attenuate the high end. 5 stars on sale 4 stars @ full price
So, v2 is MUCH better with the heat off of the left monitor. I am confident that when I leave these plugged in while I am away that I will not be setting my house/cats on fire. Actually, I envision that with v1, the cat would light on fire first, and, being stupid, the cat would stop, drop and roll on the curtains, thus transferring the fire to my house.
New light is nice, but it should be something you can switch off. That said, its in my periphery all day and I don't notice.
They sound identical to the v1, which always sounded solid given the use case. My comment stands on a THICC low end.... if you want that instagram model abolsute THICC low end, get a sub...
MOST IMPORTANTLY, thank you DROP for the discount to all v1 owners. This is the EXACT respect you need to show to customers who were likely disappointed with the v1. Thats how you do business, and thats how you convinced me to upgrade.
Some of the biggest issues with V1 are that the included cables were too short, the back of the right unit got uncomfortably warm (maybe hot would be a better description), and the stand had too much wiggle. All of these got addressed and now they are a pretty solid pair of desktop speakers on a budget. They are compact which is great for smaller desks or if you got a big monitor. I can't say I use the bluetooth functionality much on the previous version, partially because it had a pretty small range. I have not tested bluetooth on the new model but I'll update my review once I give it a go and have some more time with it. So far, these are much better and are an easy recommendation.
Update: The Bluetooth seems to be improved on V2. Pairing it with my Google Home Mini that's across the room, I had no issues with connectivity whereas V1 would often drop out. Latency is pretty standard for Bluetooth audio and the sound quality is more than passable for your standard codecs.
Improved flaws of V1 which is enough to warrant my purchase
I really like the form factor and concept of the BMR1s. V1s definitely had multiple flaws that almost felt like early backers were beta testing the hardware, now owning V2s it makes me appreciate these more to people as the inherent potential for a good low profile desktop speakers in an alternative to budget studio monitors.
Things fixed in V2 from the original is the heat output, RFI (high noise floor, white noise?) emitting on standby, popping and sparking from plugging in the speakers to power and the god awful bright LED button.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to pay the full price of $129 for these, The discount drop gave me for being an owner of the V1s was palatable, these should be in the $80 range if they're going to do yearly incremental revisions of this.
Overall, it has been improved and this V2 should have been already in V1 on release. Only you can be the judge in your use case for this product.
The v1s did end up becoming my daily drivers, though I used a remote-controlled outlet to turn them off when not in use due to temperature concerns.
Happy to say, the tempture reduction seems to have worked. In a day of use , it is slightly warmer near the amp than the rest of the body when active, but absolutely nowhere near the concerning levels of the v1. Personally wouldn't be concerned anymore if I left these on all the time, especially with low power mode.
I do wish the LED in low power mode was even dimmer—or ideally, just off. That said, the dimmer LED is a welcome improvement. Only annoying when I turn my computer off and the light is still barely on.
Not having a physical volume knob doesn’t bother me much, though a small one on the back might have been a nice touch. I actually prefer the sleekness as I have them mounted under my monitor and use keyboard/macropad controls/knob to adjust system volume. As with previous iterations, these speakers are quite loud. Plugged directly into my motherboard, I’ve rarely needed to set them above ~26.
Overall, still think they sound great for the form factor. They probably aren't going to blow any audiophile minds, but they’re a fantastic option for tight spaces like mine. Definitely add a sub if you want bass extension, but I've been more than happy using them as desktop speakers for casual listening.
So, I missed out on the first version of these years ago and from the sentiment I've read they weren't a huge hit. What I like about the version 2's are the form factor and the sheer amount of sound and detail that come out of these. I think that the ability to mount these vertically or horizontally is a plus. If these had a dedicated volume knob and a subwoofer add on, they would be a home-run for folks who just want a solid, no hassle desktop audio solution. I'll do some testing with adding my 8 inch sub and routing sound through my interface with a dual 1/4 trs to 3.5mm to see how much better these can sound.
teedsterWill you be using the Subwoofer Output in the BMR1 to connect your current 8" subwoofer? I would also recommend utilizing the 2.1 switch on the back of the BMR1 to get a bit more performance from the drivers.
T.FernandezI will most likely route sound from my interface to the sub and then from sub to the BRM1's. I'll still use the 2.1 switch. I haven't done it yet but will update once I have.
