Brad Zinker - Hit it out of the park! Pro's: 1. Perfect design 2. Perfect execution of design EXCELLENT in the following ways: easy deployment, ceramic bearings, grippy flipper tab, perfectly centered, flawless grind, good clip, ZERO blade play, Super light milled out titanium frame, easy to disassemble, clean out and maintain.
Con's: 1. Not as sharp out of the box as it looks... Could due with a good stropping. The tip scares me a little (sharpening with out rounding it off)

(Take this criticism with a grain of salt my KME sharpener has made me spoiled, I view most razor blades and being not that sharp. My plan for now is a good stropping and a re-profile some time in the distant future. The knife below is as sharp as it looks : )

The Dogtooth displaced the Modus as my EDC... for now, keep the excellent blades coming .
Great Job Brad and Massdrop... This knife was worth the wait

Hi Massdrop peoples! Ok, I'm going to do something I rarely do and that is review a knife which I Just received and only handled for 1 day. Reason behind this is 2 fold. 1) I may not be carrying this knife much at all, as this is a very unique knife and (spoiler) I don't want to put wear and tear on it because I like it so much. 2) It's a low serial number (don't hate me) in the single digits.
Okay, on to the review,
Fit and Finish: All I can say is "Wow". I chose the Blue Anodized and it looks sweet. I thought it was going to be a more glossy finish, but it came more matted, which is more to my liking. The knife is perfectly centered and razor sharp. The edge bevel is perfectly symmetrical (as far as I can tell. I didn't hold it under a magnifying glass). No blade play and no nicks or anything. No hotspots from the "squeeze" test. The pocket clip is the fold over deep carry style and the screws are recessed so they don't interfere with the clip going over you pants pockets. The clip's loop is large enough to accommodate my 5.11's with no snagging and it has enough tension to hold it in place.
Action: The detent is perfect on this small blade. Can use the "push button" or the "light switch" method to open. The flipper tab is textured (most call it "jimping") on 2 spots to facilitate a comfortable flip. When closing, the blade almost drops shut with a light shake (think how the ZT 0452CF feels when you close it). That's pretty amazing for a knife that is not broken in with 100s of flips.
Ok, done raving. If there is another drop, I would probably buy another (this one, I would actually carry). I would grade the knife I received an A+. Perfect score and a part of my permanent collection.

I picked up the Smock earlier this year and it's my favorite Spyderco. I prefer the non-leaf shaped blade.

stoutdogI got mine a few months ago. I like it. I like the new take on a compression lock. Works really well.

Great knife! It's light, strong, great looking, sharp and fast opening. This is my second Brad Zinker design and I have become a fan. I prefer thin sleek folders. I appreciate the lightweight simple design with it's clean lines. I like the matte blue finish of the handle and the minimal flipper tab. It's just about the right size for a Gentleman's folder. The Warncliffe blade profile is what drew me to it. I'm not quite sure about the dual grind, although it does present a different look. Obviously the choil is for sharpening only. I think this might be one my backup steak knifes if the restaurant has dull or lousy knifes. I was tempted to get a couple of the liner lock versions with G-10 and CF scales but, I am satisfied with this one. Well done Massdrop and WE! Update Sorry to hear about some having opening or detente issues. I have never had any at all and it still fires open with little effort.

I got L045. Build quality is perfect, no disappointments or surprises. Very smooth action. Not much else to say, Massdrop delivered a great knife.
Ok, one negative, it had a lot of factory oil on it. I had to spend 15 seconds wiping it off!
Oh and the name "massdrop" is written on the case upside down. However if you're opening it at a table full of people, they'll see it right-side-up. Clearly Massdrop is playing 4-dimensional marketing chess here.

Great knife, I really like it. I love wharncliffe blades and find them very useful for EDC. This knife is built with good materials and I think the price I fair, if a bit underpriced.  The good:
  1. The blade stock is thin and it is ground very thin behind the edge (I measured about .018"). It came sharp and I love the very precise tip. This knife cuts like a scalpel. I get very sick of folding knives with blades so thick that they don't cut very well.
  2.  The knife is very light for it's size. I measured it at 2.3 ounces with a cutting edge of 3.03".  The blade to weight ratio is second best in my collection (the only one better is the Benchmade 531 Pardue).
  3. The knife carries very well. The handle is very thin and the overall profile is slim. I don't really feel it at all in my pocket. The pocket clip is very deep and works very well. I like how the teardrop shape of the handle gets narrower as it gets closer to the pocket clip. This means that when I put my hand in my pocket to get something, there is very little knife to get in the way and it guides my hand down the back of the handle. The flipper tab is also very subtle and doesn't get in the way of other things in my pocket.
  4. I like the overall shape and looks of the knife, and I think that the stonewashed version really looks good. The stonewash will also hide scratches.
  5. The action is very good. It doesn't come out as hard and snappy as my ZT0450, but it is reliable and smooth. This knife has much lower lockbar tension, so closing the knife is much easier and smoother than the ZT0450.
  6. Lockup is very solid and secure. I have no worries with this knife. I like the jimping on the lockbar; it isn't sharp and gives you good grip while disengaging the lock.
  7. I like how deep the blade buries into the handle when closed, and how the tip goes almost all the way to the end of the handle. The blade to handle ratio is well above the average in my collection.
The bad:
  1. I could do without the duplex grind on the blade. I get that people want a heavy duty knife, but to me, wharncliffe blades should be thin, slicey and very precise. I work in an office and mostly use knives to open packages, cut apples and to cut threads off my close. I really don't understand people who use folding knives to peirce through car doors and hammer them into trees to use them as a step stool. ALl that being said, the thick portion of the blade is still relatively thin and effective at cutting.
  2.  From the factory, the edge bevel was paper thin. It was still sharp enough to cleanly slice newspaper, but the angle just seemed very obtuse. I re-sharpened it and widened out the bevel slightly. It is scary sharp now and shaves hair like a razor. The very acute tip cuts like a scalpel.
  3. I wish that they would do something else with the choil. It isn't big enough to use as a forward finger choil and is bigger than it needs to be as a sharpening choil. Personally, I don't get the craze over forward finger choils, so I would prefer if the sharpening choil were made smaller so I could get a longer cutting edge.
  4. The pivot needs torx drivers on both sides to unscrew. I would appreciate a captive post on one side and a torx screw on the other.
A lot of other reviewers have complained about how the edges of the lockbar relief cut are sharp and catch on their pockets. I can see what they mean, but I personally haven't found it to be a problem. My ZT0450 has that issue much worse because the portion of the pocket clip that touches the handle rests right on the edge of the relief cut. The only negatives I could think of are based on my preferences and are really just nit picky things. If you like wharncliffe blades and the style of this knife, I would definitely recommend it. It's very similar to a Kershaw Leek (which I also own) except that it is built with better materials and build quality and has a manual action on bearings. All of those things are wins in my book. I like it enough that I'm kind of tempted to buy the liner lock version in wood or carbon fiber if they do another drop in the future.

Fit and finish was excellent, color (blue) matched screen shot nicely. Knife's action was smooth, can be opened and closed one handed. S35 blade was sharp, but not as sharp as other MD knives I have ordered. Deep carry pocket clip is well done, and others will not be able to tell what is on the other end of the clip. Good for nervous workplace scenarios! Real issue: detent is loose and knife can be snapped open without using the flipper tab. This happens about 50% of the time when a moderate force shake is given to the knife. An unreliable detent is acceptable on a $40 cheapie knife, but at this price point, I expect better, and indeed my MD / Ferrum Forge Buc is 100% reliable at the exact same price. MD customer service was excellent and has sent a replacement out. Hopefully that one will be properly tuned - the knife is attractive and useful, and appears well made in most categories, so I hope the replacement is trouble free. EDIT: Second knife had same issue, w blade flying open with a shake or two. Either i have bad luck or other owners do not perceive this as a problem. Returned both knives to MD, who handled the return with excellent and rapid service.

The detent and action on mine is really good. IMO, Its actually one of the better tuned knives I've received from massdrop. This one is darn near perfect, for me.

Gunnersmate2I think the same about mine, only the Buc has had an equivalent action. I guess the Keen and the newer, anodized Crux have also been well beyond the first few runs in terms of action, but the Dogtooth is probably the best.

All I can do is nitpick because this is a very well made knife. If I could have one little change, it would be a bit more length on the choil. Terrific knife and one of the best MD collaborations yet.

Sharp2dayAgree, the choil confuses me. I'm not a fan of finger choils period, but if you're going to have one it should be usable. I would have preferred this with more usable blade and no choil. I also agree this is a nitpick as the knife is *excellent*. Fit and finish are perfect. Only other nitpick I'll add is that, because it's a very narrow framelock, you have to be careful how you're holding it when you open it. This is a problem with all framelocks but is compounded by this knife's small size and small flipper tab.
Love the knife otherwise.

Still having a hard time opening the knife, because of even a small amount of pressure on the lockbar keeps it from engaging. It is very frustrating at times. So because of that, I can only give 3 stars

ml266Was very frustrated trying to open this, never realizing that it is my hand squeezing the lock bar. Thanks for the information.

Whoa, I was impressed by the design and specs and I am even more impressed with the execution. This knife is the best of the dozen or so Massdrop exclusives I've tried and I absolutely love all of the Ferrum Forge x Massdrop stuff. It really is EDC perfection. Grippy enough, very light weight with a compact profile, absolutely perfect flipper tab that is non obstructive in the pocket. It also just looks GREAT! The action is as good as it can be and lock up is rock solid; this feels like a surprisingly solid knife for its diminutive size and weight. I suspect this is evident of some very low manufacturing tolerances. A small request would be a dedicated lanyard hole, but something can be rigged up in the skeletonized scales.
Not to knock Boker too much, but if you are going off of the quality of their BZ designed knives to gauge whether or not you want the Dogtooth, don't; this is a flawless and super solid build that will last with regular EDC use. I'm picky and they really covered just about everything. Maybe I'll discover a problem if I ever have a reason to take it apart, but this isn't foreseeable at the moment.

L283 - perfect, just maybe my new favorite light edc, deep carry, just disappeared in the pocket, not stabby looking, drop shut. Have requested a second already. Gentleman's Carry. Love the blade to handle ratio. Highly Recommend!
