Hey everyone, We are excited to share this new keyboard kit with the community. We are hoping this will be the first of many we will offer in the future. A quick breakdown of the what and why for those curious - WHAT This is a simple 60% keyboard kit. It utilizes hot-swap sockets so no soldering will be required. In addition, we are using stand-off screws - which is brand new to us (and I can't recall any keyboard kits in the community that uses these). The case form factor is new and will be in acrylic for this round. We are offering three different plate types for this kit - aluminum, brass, and copper. Keycaps / switches are not offered as part of he pre-order. Though there are some options available on the site - in the coming weeks / months we are hoping to expand that selection as well. WHY We started with a 60% layout because 60% keyboards were and still are one of the more popular layouts for customs. We wanted this kit to be more accessible to everyone in the community - which is why we picked hot-swap sockets. The addition of the new stand-off screws make assembly much simpler as well - really the only tool you will need is a Phillips head screwdriver. Instead of offering many different case colors like we usually do with our kits - we are offering only acrylic this round to really highlight the RGB lighting on the PCBA. Instead of case materials, we wanted to explore different plate materials with the community this time. Different plate materials affecting the typing experience is not a brand new concept. Matt3o had mentioned it when we undertook the WhiteFox previously (he liked the flex that aluminum gives when typing vs a more stiff steel plate). In recent years, I've been hearing it more and more from many that are deep in the rabbit hole. For example, some swear by very tactile switches paired with stiff plates like brass while others love linears paired with more flexible plates. Our goal is to add more options in the future as well, so the three you see here are only the beginning. Finally, the way this product page is setup is a bit different from how we usually would do it. We are working on site upgrades that will help make purchasing keyboard kits and the many parts / components easier in the future. Stayed tuned for more on this.

It does not. Layout is fixed due to the placement of the hotswap sockets on the PCBA.

It would be very difficult at least. The sockets are big and get in the way of each other. I certainly have not seen one yet.

YanboWuI was going to order but I trust the feedback of the enthusiasts. I’ve gotten an entry level board from Amazon as my first 60%. Was excited to see this in my email but it seems like it’s almost similar to the one I have. I really like this frosted acrylic look though, that’s the one I’m going for. I agree with someone down there to have someone like Taeha Types build one that connects the enthusiasts with the newbies. I’m sure he’ll know what works.

YanboWuOkay - I'm not keyboard techie at all. Once this is built, will I be able to use it with an iMac? Currently using Apple's standard BT keyboard. Thanks.

YanboWuI am a noob at this, coming from a Razer Huntsman. I've been fascinated by these fancy looking keyboards Is it easy to build my own with your kit for a noobie?

chris_decemberYou’ll need switches, stabilizers, and key caps. Depending on the switch you might need to clip off two plastic pins before inserting the switch.

chris_decemberYes, it's pretty straightforward. This kit includes stabilizers, so all you will need are switches and keycaps. The PCBA will accept plate-mount (3-pin) as well as PCB-mount switches (5-pin), so any MX-style switch you choose will work. Just be careful when installing the switches and make sure the pins are straight before inserting a switch into a socket. Otherwise you may risk damaging the switch and/or socket on the PCBA. There's a build guide video for the Preonic on the respective product page that shows how to properly install switches. https://drop.com/buy/preonic-mechanical-keyboard

Llublu1972Yes, but the locations of Option and Command will be reversed by default. You can change this by flashing a custom layout where L_GUI and L_Alt are swapped. The same would apply on the right side of the spacebar.

Casual-Brian96Yes, it is compatible with MX Browns. Holy Pandas are significantly more tactile than MX Browns with the bump at the beginning of the keystroke. If you wish MX Browns were more tactile and/or heavier, you may like Holy Pandas.

YanboWuLove what you are doing, but will there be other size variants in the future (Especially 65% or an exploded 75%) because the only thing holding me back from checking this out is the layout/size. This looks like it has a lot of potential. A PCB with both per-key RGB and an underglow, with plate options sounds amazing. Apart from this, any plans to experiment with case options? (i.e. part aluminum part acrylic for underglow & more weight, etc.)

YanboWuLike you mentioned I would like to try the different plate materials. However in the order option there isn't a choice to just order extra plates without ordering a whole extra board. Is there going to be a way to just order plates so we can swap them and try different ones?

YanboWuOut of curiosity, would you happen to know if the Brass and Copper plates would have any kind of PVD coating or anything similar to prevent tarnishing and oxidation? Also, any information about warranty? Or any notion if replacement parts such as the PCB might be available in the future?

fed250I dunno if it will work but if you add keeb to your cart then add the plate and then remove the Carina keyboard from your cart it just keeps the plate in there. But you can order this keyboard and all 3 plates by just adding the plates under it

It wouldn't let me show my whole cart, but I have the Carina keyboard at the top. Then the aluminum, brass, then copper plate added and it should come out to $190 for all 3, I just have a $20 referral discount. You used to be able to just add the parts on the check out page but I just clicked pre-order for the Carina with the aluminum plate, closed my cart then added another Corina with brass plate, etc. Then it just shows "- 3 +" under the keyboard in your cart. So just hit the minus symbol twice or replace the 3 with a 1. Since the description says try out your favorite plate or get all 3 if you aren't sure and find your favorite.
