I'm really a big fan of this keyboard. It took me awhile to decide, as previously I was running a TKL keyboard and was considering whether or not the loss of function rows was going to be an issue. I'll say with the layering, its only slightly more inconvenient as I use the function rows and tilde a lot. Though in terms of the sound and feel, its much better than my previous. Switching to silent linears, the keyboard is almost effectively quiet, which is what I like. Went with the stock and didn't make any mods, as I'm not interested in modding. For a complete experience, I'll say its definitely worth it. If you unsure about loss of function row, then go with the CSTM80.
I really love the cstm65, I can finally put this hobby to rest! At least that's what I've told myself, I love that drop is offering a keyboard that you can change a lot. All you really need is switches and caps and you can make it anyway you want. At stock it's a great board, sound feel and everything. But I found that the stabilizers don't hold up after changing the plates. I went from stock to brass and yo fr4. I don't like touching the stabs because I don't know how to tune them but now my stabs wobble and it's really hard to game with key caps that flop around.
Love the default look of the keyboard, and really enjoying the ease with which it's possible to customise it. Great deal at $99, in my view!
Only bit I found tricky was customising the RGB - I could not yet figure out how to set a custom fixed colour for all keycaps (other than using Fn+CTRL+1/2/3/4 for a selection of four testing colours) using the Drop Configurator.
This has easily become my go to keyboard for 95% of what I do. The stock sound and feel of the keyboard is amazing with just a few caveats. Only buy it when it is on sale at for $99. Anything more then that an the value isn't as good. It really should have shipped with the aluminum cover plate by default, or at least add a customizer so we could add the upgraded parts to the keyboard without the waste of the old ones. Weight of the keyboard is ok, but some might want to upgrade the stock weight in the keyboard.
Now for the good stuff. The amount of upgradability of this keyboard is amazing. I think as a starting point into the keyboard hobby you can't go wrong with this one. The stock Keycaps are amazing. I love that the text is on the front. IDK why this isn't standard for all keyboards. Gateron Yellows are (at least for me) almost perfect and are by far the best switch I have used to date. The stock stabilizers are some of the best I have seen in a (when on sale) 100 dollar keyboard.
TLDR Buy when on sale...
This is my first keyboard that has strayed from mainstream brands (corsair K70 and razer blackwidow).
The packaging that the keyboard arrived in was well packaged with plastic bubble protection to ensure no unnecessary movement during shipping.
Down to the physical keyboard packaging....well it just holds the keyboard and keeps it safe. What can I say, it did its job.
My first impression with the keyboard left me very impressed. The metal body and low profile is exactly what i have been looking for in a keyboard as my daily driver. The Gateron brown switches sound amazing and have a very satisfying effect while typing that was immediately noticed by myself and my wife.
Overall, I will be buying an additional cstm 65 or 85 to replace my keyboard for my office, the quality is top notch which cannot be understated!
I was pleasantly surprised when I received the Drop CSTM65. It looks even better in person than I expected. The design is sleek and modern, and the overall aesthetics are stunning, making it a great addition to my desk setup.
The polycarbonate case does produce a slightly lighter, higher-pitched sound compared to aluminum or other heavier materials. While this might not be ideal for those who prefer a deeper, thocky sound profile, it’s still far from being a dealbreaker. In fact, the typing feel is excellent, and it’s enjoyable for work.
Overall, I’m very satisfied with this purchase. The CSTM65 is definitely one of my favorite keyboards right now, and I see myself using it daily for the foreseeable future. If you’re looking for a beautiful, customizable 65% keyboard, this one won’t disappoint. Highly recommended!
I own both the cstm80 and cstm65. Both are great boards that sound good and area a good value. I prefer the feel of the 65% overall. Something about the bezel design just works better in the smaller form factor. I'm a big fan of this one. I bought it for really cheap and was planning to customize the black top with either stickers or spray paint. But once it got here, I really liked the black plastic a lot. No need to jazz it up, it looks sleek all by itself.
For the price I paid $99, you really can't do better. The keyboard sounds awesome out of the box with the yellows. Decent weight to it too. The frame it comes with is plastic but if I get the one made of aluminum I think this will be one of my top 3 keyboards.
