Hi everyone,
We’re glad to announce that the Massdrop CTRL Mechanical Keyboards have arrived at our warehouse. Our team is wrapping up quality control checks and we expect the keyboards to begin shipping to members in the next few days.
Thank you so much for your patience in spite of the delay. We’re looking forward to you receiving your keyboard soon.
JaleesaGSweet. Any update on the firmware? Will it be merged to qmk when they start shipping? Or is there a fork of qmk on github that we can pull from?
JaleesaGSuper. Could we get an acknowledgement that the firmware will be open source at ship or within a few days thereof? Edit: we did, below. Thanks, all.
ManyThingsIf it's based on QMK, then most of it _has_ to be open source (as the GPL2 demands that derivative works also be licensed with GPL2). Also, I don't think jackhumbert would let them merge crap code to the qmk master branch (and he'd make sure it got fixed if they did).
chucktdriscollSure; I’m not worrying about the quality. I’m worried about it not actually being based on QMK. It’s just a little concerning that no one seems to be out here reassuring drop participants about anything.
ManyThingsWell, they mentioned that they were going with QMK multiple times on the drop overview page. If they back out and go with anything other than QMK, I'll be demanding a refund immediately as that's a make-or-break feature for me.
chucktdriscollHi @chucktdriscoll, the needed QMK changes have been running on a separate fork for the past couple months. We're in the process of updating it to conform to the latest changes in the master QMK repository with guidance from Jack, Skully, and Fred.
We're aiming to get the changes merged in soon. If there are delays, we can point to the fork as an interim solution.
jxliuGlorious! Thank you for the update on that front. Glad to hear my doubts were misplaced, and that Jack and co. are in the loop, they're stellar guys who know what they're about.
hebrewbaconGot mine today, prefer MX Clears over the Trues, solid feel, but the tactile bump is non existent. Lighting is solid, but not going to work with anything that has shine through below the halfway mark. The Only Modifiers lighting option doesn't seem to work.
JaleesaGColor isn’t close to what the Drop images show. The pictures on the drop page show a dark grey/matte black, the product being delivered is a shiney silver case.
I expect you’ll offer refunds for those of us who are dissatisfied with the final product?
JaleesaGso, the case color its REALLY different from the render. looks like a k-type but a little bit darker. I'm really disappointed. can u guys at least send a good case with the right color for the one that dislike the final product?
Chernicharo@JaleesaG In the case that you plan to do another production run of the CTRL, you could allow upset customers to return their silver case for a replacement dark grey case; you would still get use out of the silver case in a future run where you might allow an option to choose between the current case and a redesigned case closer to the images we were shown when we bought in. It's a big difference aesthetically. I'll live either way, but some of us have contributed a lot of money to this site and feel awfully let down by the lack of foreknowledge regarding the production case we've received.
frivoflava29good idea, but for overseas customers like me that not always a option. a only case option would be better. the keycaps are a bit off the color too, but the case still the biggest problem.
kittykatmaxI looked around, and saw that when Massdrop showed a photo of the prototype/sample product, several people commented it was way too light and that they hoped the color was to be fixed. Crickets were the response - as is the resulting too-light final product.
ChirishmanCount me among the unlucky. Unboxed mine today and an edge led in front of the spacebar is messed up. Green when the LEDs are yellow, blue when the LEDs are white and dead when the LEDs are red.
Also, is it just me, or do the alphas look awful against the case? I was hoping it would look better in person, but to my eyes, the case is a bluish metallic gray (that I like, even if it's not what I wanted), but the alpha keycaps are a brownish gray that looks fugly against it. I actually otherwise liked the keycaps (even if the sandpaper texture is a bit weird) but the alphas just kill it for me.
JaleesaGJust got the board today. Looks like everything is working so far including all the LEDs. I removed those ugly keycaps and replaced it with my pulse set. Really digging the look!
hebrewbaconLooks good...but I've never understood putting on keycaps that aren't shine throughs on a backlit board. It's a shame they seem to be so rare when it comes to replacement sets.
KethThat's a valid point however I prefer getting a keycap set that I like vs getting generic shine throughs. It's definitely a trade-off and I enjoy having the satisfaction of owning a rare set.
KethEh, even non-shinethrough keycaps look great on a well backlit board, especially with a board like this where the case is quite reflective. Yeah you don't get light through the caps, but a lot bleeds out from between them.
p.s. I'm running GMK Plum on mine and it looks dope, especially with the white backlight with the scrolling red. Now if only those two underglow LEDs weren't busted I'd be quite happy with this rig.
chucktdriscollYeah, I've got that only displays blue and green. Got my ticket in, so waiting to see what happens there. Maybe the Retype will end up being the way to go.
Edit: I just got a "We're currently experiencing a high volume of support claims" message...wonderful.
chucktdriscollVery ironic. You’re running a keyboard that looks nothing like the renders and using a keyset that the creator admitted they didn’t come out the right color. Perfect match! 😂
KethThe delay in response to support requests is getting to be a bit excessive (submitted request on Saturday for blown LEDs, here we are midday Wednesday and I have yet to hear back apart from the canned message). What's worse is that while I've seen MD persons post at least a prelim response to the case color issue, I've seen no response or acknowledgment regarding the underglow LED issues that appear to be fairly prevalent.
KethThanks for sharing this! From all the research i've done it seems like a solid board, but I'm pretty new to mechanical keyboards. Any things you see that might be concerns?
chucktdriscollI just got a message from Dave R. in MD Support. He acknowledged the concerns people have with the keyboard and authorized a return for refund. I already sold it, but I expect others who have contacted MD will be getting the same message soon.
chucktdriscollI'm just happy mine is on the back side, so it's not super noticeable when using it. I seem to be lucky having only 1 dead though, which is pretty bad.
chucktdriscollI guess I must be one of the lucky ones to get a perfect board (knocks on wood). I haven't had a single issue so far and am really loving this board!
hebrewbaconNah, I suspect many people aren't having technical issues with theirs (apart from the case color thing). It's just the people with issues are far more likely to be vocal, meaning these discussion pages represent a skewed view of things.
krishpyInput Club makes solid products, it's a fully addressable RGB board with edge lighting, but because they're not floating keys I don't think it will look as good with non shine through caps. You just won't get as much back light reflection. Says it supports USB fast charge, but is only a 2.0 hub...so it can't supply much power. Another downside, which the CTRL has as well, is that you need to use keys witches with fully transparent tops and bottoms for the lighting to work properly...but that's a price you have to pay for hotswap + LED's. It just severely limits your switch choices if you want to make the most of the board...Namely I can't use my beloved MX Clears.
It uses the same sockets as the CTRL, so they're truly hot swappable...first thing I tested when I got this board. Should be available with the Halo switches, as Input Club designed them or speced them.
KethThe keys are swappable though right? The keys in the demo images don't look very transparent though. They are practically non transparent except for the text. Don't RE:Type provide the keys though or is that just an added feature? Would I be able to use Cherry MX brown switches?
krishpyI think you're confusing key caps with key switches. You need MX Brown RGB switches if you want the back light to be properly visible, as they have fully transparent bodies. Se below...same switch with different bodies.
KethInput Club designed the Halo switches, yes, but they mistakenly signed the rights to them away to Massdrop. There was a major fallout over it in 2017 - both sides released statements you can find via google.
That said, no, the RE:Type will NOT have Halo’s available, but rather Input Club’s response to the Massdrop feud, “Hako” - a BOX variant of their Halo design.
KethAhh gotcha! That makes sense. Does the RE:Type allow me to select them or do I have to get them separately?
Based on what Xylem is saying. Does the keyboard come with Hako switches by default or can we just order the plain board or like I stated above I can pick MX Brown RGB switches when ordering?
krishpyNo idea, the board isn't available yet. My guess it it will come with the Hako switches, with the option to buy a bare board and insert your own switches.
