Received my ctrl and it works fine using USB-C to USB-A with my older MBPr. But it is dead to the world when connected to a brand new Macbook via USB-C to USB-C.
Anyone have similar experience? Did I get a defective unit?
RobWilAn update, I bought a specifically USB 2.0 C type cable ( http://a.co/d/ihZ7lzl ) and that worked. I am guessing they are not backwards compatible?
timesscarI've been using a brand new C to C cable... I don't think that is my problem. I've tested the cable as a charging cable, and it works just fine. So unless there are USB C cables that are power only, I feel like the cable probably isn't the issue.
That being said, I'm about to furiously search for the specs on the cable I was given now...
RobWilI'm not suggesting your cable is bad, but rather that it is probably USB 3.0 - 3.1. I have several and none work (despite working fine on other devices) and they're all 3.0+. This is the only one I have that is specifically USB 2.0 and it works.
nukeNinja@nukeNinja - I think @luna.g might be on to something. I reviewed a bunch of random posts on Apple's USB-C cables, and it seems like there was at least a time when some of apples cables were power only. Given that my cord was work-issued and paired specifically with an power brick, I'm thinking it might be the source of my issues.
I ordered a cheap, well reviewed USB-C cord off amazon that should arrive tomorrow. I'll update the thread on if it works or not.
timesscarThanks @timesscar, I see what you were saying. That might be the issue. I also am working with a apple-made cord, and it seems like some apple cords are power-only. I ordered a new cord (C-to-C, 3.1) that is data/power, so I'm going to test that tomorrow when it is due to arrive. If not, my next step is testing your theory of USB 2 v. 3. Thanks again for clarifying
RobWilWell, I have the cord and it is not power only. It is the cord that came with my MBP last year. So, if at some point it was power only, they met a demanding customer like me, that complained seriously. I would get F@#*ING PISSED if I bought a $2000 laptop to find that the cord was power only because of $1 saving.
As I made clear to the support, I will not accept a particular cable as a solution. In special, I won’t accept a usb 2.0 cable, since that cable cannot be used to connect monitor or external HD.
But I was told that @YanboWu was working on a fix. So I’m waiting.
nukeNinjaHey there, we did more checking with our engineers - there was actually a recall for Macbook USB C cables due some design issues - https://www.apple.com/support/usbc-chargecable/ that might be affecting your compatibility.
We've also done tests with the USB C cable from Apple. We were able to connect USB C to C on both the Macbook Pro and Dell Laptop.
YanboWu@YanboWu Then I believe my unit is defective. At this point I have tried multiple Apple USB-C cables, new and old. Additionally, I ordered an alternate brand of cable that works with every device I've used it with, accept my keyboard. Can you advise me on next steps to get my defective unit replaced?
YanboWuMy MBP is from September 2017, more than 1.5 years after the problem with cables. The cable also works with everything except the keyboard as I mentioned. But not matter, I went to the Apple store, had them bring me 5 different cables for the fun of it, and the result it that it doesn't work with my MBP. And for the fun of it, I also connected to their display units MBPs and the result it that it didn't work either.
YanboWuAny configuration required on Mac to achieve success? What model MBP?
Also I can verify that certain c- to c- pass through (dongle) doesn’t help. Can any plug and play experts explain why a c- to a- is required to make it work out of the box? Related to c-‘s pin out flexibility?
