Is it possible to swap the "Windows" and left alt key caps to put the windows key next to the spacebar? I assume the re-mapping of the keys is trivial but I don't have much experience with modifying keyboard hardware

ChillinDogYes, they are both 1.25u wide. You can simply swap the keycaps. The keyboard comes with a keycap puller included.
