I posted this in the 2P discussions, but thought it would be appropriate to ask here as well: I'd like some input from those that own both the 1P and 2P. When I purchased my X-Mid 2P, I thought I was getting a spacious 1P tent (like almost every other 2P tent out there). But nope, Dan designed this to be a true 2P tent. The inner floor and the footprint are huge! Now I'm wondering if the 1P might have been a better choice since I'll use this by myself most of the time. But the X-Mid 1P inner seems so cramped. What are your thoughts?
LitefootThe X-Mid 2P is quite generous for a 2P, while the X-Mid 1P is closer to an average 1P tent, so there is quite a large difference between the two sizes. The floor area of the 1P is about average, whereas the 1P headroom and vestibule area are still above average. I don't think it's cramped because the floor is an average size but there's good headroom and the vestibules on both sides make it feel more spacious (e.g. you're not right next to the fly). It's just mesh walls and then a lot more space for gear storage, cooking etc. Some people find the 1P inner small but it seems like >95% of people are content with the size. The people that find it small seem to be 6'2" and taller, or broad chested and thus prefer more width. For most people I think it provides a reasonable amount of space. I personally much prefer the 1P for solo use. I think the 2P is overkill whereas I'm 6'0" / 180 lbs and quite happy with the space it has.

dandurston I didn't think about the large vestibules making it seem more spacious. I've probably been jaded by a 1P Walrus I once had with about the same floor area, but with much smaller vestibules and less head space. Thanks, Dan! That's what I needed to hear. I'm going to order one.
LitefootI owned the 1p from the original drop(hmm or 2nd ?? cant remember, anyways at least 1.5 years of ownership and use) , loved it, so also bought the 2p as I wanted to have a play with it and the weight penalty was not very much for a 2p tent so thought I would switch out to it if I preferred. What I found through my own use and preferences is that the 2p was 'too spacious'. I didn't ever end of using the vestibules other than to cook in poor weather, everything was inside with me. I am also a mostly solo female hiker, so often want to pitch in hidden locations, so may deal with tight squeezes between foilage, or uneven ground. For this purpose the 2p XMid just did not suit me in the way the 1p did. So for me, the 1p XMid is the clear winner in my own situation, it feels like a very roomy 1p for me and my gear. The vestibules are huge and even in poor weather I never feel too confined. Each persons needs are different through and honestly, you can't go wrong with purchasing either the 1 or 2p XMid, both fantastic tents that you will be lucky to own.

JulesyMcJulesfaceJulesy, thank you so much! Great insight. I really like your comment about the 2p inner being so large for one person that you can get all your equipment inside making the large vestibules seem like wasted space. I think you may have described how I feel without me really understanding how I felt. Thanks! Anyway, I’m waiting on the 1P to drop so I can scoop one up. Any day now right?
LitefootI also prefer the 1P for solo use. I'm 6'0" and find it cozy whereas the 2P is almost lonely is so spacious. Both should be back on Drop.com any day now, although I don't know their exact plans. The 1P is available on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca currently but only ship within those countries.

dandurstonThanks, Dan. Your careful attention to us X-mid'ers is a rare, but much-welcomed, exception in the outdoor gear world these days. I got tired of waiting for the 1P to show up here, so I acted against my self-imposed embargo and ordered it from Amazon. Looking forward to giving a report.
