Just an update in November 2020 since this drop is live again: While the review below was done with a complimentary review pair, I wasn't just saying that I recommend this pair--I bought a pair myself early 2020 in the size that would fit me (since I'd lost a few inches and the jeans had stretched). This is currently one of my two favorite pairs of jeans, the other being from Raleigh Denim. End update --- I totally missed the launch for this product! I'd received a review pair last summer, and wrote the following review in October, 2019. Feel free to respond with questions if need be. I will add the photos soon; they're in a Google Drive folder right now that I need to organize. But just in case, here's a link to my Drive folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14xDqY5S_iWxBqv7z9vslUNbn8MaFdqPP?usp=sharing I stopped wearing these on January 04, 2020--which marked the end of an international trip. I lost some inches off the waist by then, and the jeans had stretched. I will post wear updates below. Review: I’ve been wear-testing a pair of these for some time now, and it’s time to jot down my thoughts. This might get a little long, so bear with me. I’m gonna divide this into two sections--objective and subjective. Most reviews I see online are “oh, I love this pair and such and such and this and that”, but it’s usually all subjective. I have written reviews like these too. So while this review will have a subjective component, there is also an objective component wherein I compare different features of various pairs of denim I have. I’ll simply state the facts, and you can make the choice. Hopefully this would appeal to people who try to make more logical decisions before investing in stuff. I’ll start with the more traditional subjective review. PS. All opinions here are mine, including potential pricing. I’m speculating based upon the pricing of their previous denim runs. Subjective
Overview. I started my selvedge denim journey with a pair of Uniqlos ($45) about four years ago. From then I moved next to Unbranded, which by many (including myself) is considered great bang for your buck. However I’ve also recently been trying premium denim by the likes of Rogue Territory and the Naked & Famous Made in Japan line. Basically, I’ve quite extensively tried out denim ranging from $45 to $275.  Overall, I absolutely love these jeans. Many people ask what’s the difference between a low-budget denim and a high-budget denim. Well, when you hold a premium pair in your hand, you feel it. And trust me, you feel it on this pair. In the objective section below I’ve done a comparison of various features of these different pairs at different price points. You’ll notice there that on an objective scale, the Ibara compares favorably to even the pairs priced at $250+. I can also attest that this pair subjectively feels as nice as those pairs as well--Uniqlo, Unbranded, and even Massdrop’s previous collaboration with N&F (Ichiban) do not. I do not know the price point of this denim. But in all honesty if Drop is able to drop these for $100, I’d be downright astounded--like that's just impossible. At any price up to $200 this pair would be a REALLY good purchase—$100 would just be stupid.  Fabric. The fabric is sourced from Yoshiwa Mills. It’s a medium weight (15oz) fabric, which should be good for year-round wear. The material has a lot of texture. It’s not incredibly slubby but definitely more than your average denim. It is, quite honestly, beautiful. The handfeel is… quite something. It feels rough to the hand when new, but when you wear it the scratchiness that I was expecting is surprisingly absent.

Fit. I think this is the ideal fit for a pair of denim for me personally right now. Different people would be at different stages, agreed--some would prefer skinny (I’ve been there), some prefer roomier fits (I might get there some day--have a pair of straight fit 21oz on the way). The fit on this pair is the perfect middle ground imo. Not skinny, not too roomy. I’d venture to say this is more relaxed than most slim-fits I’ve tried, but maybe that’s because I’ve preferred the skinnier side of slim until now? The rise isn’t super low, neither super high. Which to me means that you can wear it with t-shirts, untucked, but you can also wear shirts tucked in. Fit-wise this is the most versatile pair that I have right now. Details.  The fabric starts off at a medium-dark indigo level, but lightens with wear. The thread is contrasting (i.e. it doesn’t get camouflaged with the fabric), which makes it more suitable to casual wear imo. The fabric is also on the slubbier side, contributing to casual / rugged outfits. Apart from the fabric, honestly, there’s not much else in terms of visual details that scream at you. The tasteful details are there, on closer inspection. However I feel that Drop doesn’t have a “signature” design--which some people might feel is a drawback, but to me that’s one of the biggest advantages. This pair lets the denim do the talking, and imo in any pair of jeans the fabric is the most important.  Outfit ideas.  I would ideally wear this denim with rugged and/or casual outfits. I personally would not try dressing it up too much because the slub makes it casual in my head. HOWEVER it would go great with items with a heavily textured fabric (eg. Oxford cloth, herringbone wool, suede for shoes etc). I have paired these with everyday attire--t-shirts, jeans, sneakers--but I have also paired these with rugged albeit smarter outfits. Eg. White Oxford cloth button down shirt, denim, suede wingtips, safari jacket. I also tried the same outfit with a sport coat instead of the safari jacket, and that seemed to work pretty well too. Few examples below, going from casual to smart; apologize for the terrible quality. PS. These are in no way "good" outfit shots--just documenting with my phone for the explicit purpose of a review, no edits etc.

Subjective conclusion Buy this pair. If you haven’t gotten into denim yet, this might be the perfect start. Even if you already have a sizeable collection--well. You have the denim bug. This would be a worthy addition, imo. Objective Objectively, many of the features on this pair hit way above the price point. Documenting the features and some pictures below, and a comparison table I created in Google Sheets that I'm sharing below. For photos of these features from other pairs of denim in this comparison table, check my Google Drive folder for comparison shots (sorry for unlabeled photos). <table from Google Sheet> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10BUAswbYpwDobgedRzO4I4oi1vjbTNjzvSHaUSMNoVE/

Fabric. This is a 15oz medium slub fabric from Yoshiwa Mills in Japan. The weight does not have a correlation to the price of a pair of denim, but this is around the most common fabric weight for raw denim jeans. The fabric comes from the reputable Yoshiwa Mills--I have pairs that cost ~$300 that don’t disclose what mill the fabric is coming from. Buttons / hardware. Button fly with unsigned buttons on the review pair.

Construction details. Hidden rivets for back pocket--better than bar tacks, which is the standard in this price range and even some pieces above it. Belt loops are sewn into the waistband, also hitting above price range. “Ridged” belt loops--aesthetic choice imo but generally on cheaper pairs this is not present.

Other details Medium deerskin patch. Ages nicely. Cotton herringbone pocket bags. Peek coin pocket selvedge. Drop logo on the inside fly, and the herringbone fabric on the seat. The Drop logo is a nice touch (on the inside of the fly). The herringbone on the seat in particular is surprising--that’s a substantial amount of extra fabric that’s not present on any of my other pairs, and makes for a more comfortable wear.

Objective conclusion Buy this pair. The features that this pair exhibits hit way above the price point that it’s offered at. Objectively speaking, this is an extremely good value for the money you’re putting in.

The first thing I noticed when I got my sample last year was the fabric. Just wow. Nine months later: damn, I love this stuff. That's a lot of denim per sq", and I'm not talking about the 15oz weight either. It's like denim concentrate (essence of denim?). [For my fellow fountain pen enthusiasts: if it was paper it would be the love child of Tomoe River and Clairefontaine, but 100% cotton]. It's got loads of structure. Rigid at first, yet supple, rich. Even on day one, you can see and feel the slub. It just oozes character. And it only gets better with every day. This pair breaks in fast. By end of first day, I'd already forgotten I was wearing a brand-new pair of raw denim. Drop nailed the fit; slim-tapered look, relaxed feel. Combine this with the characteristics of the chosen fabric and you've got the most comfortable pair of raw denim you could ever wish for. I don't have much to say about the hardware, and that's a good thing. It does it's job and you don't notice it. Perfect. I like the deerskin patch though. I will be posting a few photos and some measurements in the coming days. For now, I'll just say that Drop worked-out any sizing issues during the community feedback initiative. My verdict: the ultimate pair of denim. Get one. Get two. I know, I will. Update Just received my second pair. First thing I did is take some measurements before putting them on. The size-32 I ordered had a 33"-waist which is half an inch less than advertised in the chart, but still within margin. IF you are at the top end of your size (that would be me) you may have to soak the waist band the first time you put them on. All other measurements matched the chart and the fit is exactly where I expect it to be at this stage of the break-in process. Final verdict: Still the ultimate pair of denim.

Well constructed but VERY small
These seem like great jeans. They have a nice cut and are obviously well constructed, but they are tiny. I wear a 32 in Naked and Famous weird guy and it's a little big. I also wear a 32 in Levis. Based on the measurements supplied by drop, I should have fit a 32. Remember that Tommy Boy scene - fat guy in a little coat? That was me in these jeans. But I'm 6' and 165#. Drop has a great return policy on these. I've sent em back, ordered a 33 AND a 34 and will update when I get those, sending the one back that doesn't fit. I'm new to nice jeans so probably my mistake. Thanks to drop for an excellent product and great customer service. Update: 33 is perfect. Tight in the waist at first. After 1-2 days stretch out nicely. Great jeans.

Hi, my pair came in today and I wrote a review for it. The fit is closer to a classic/relaxed fit. But I plan on wearing these with a pin roll cuff so everything works out great.

Exceeded my expectation.
I am a denimhead and many of the nitty gritty things in jeans to me are essential features. The highlights of this jeans is basically the details that has been put into the jeans. Tucked in belt loops, raised belt loops, Yoke lining, herring bone pocket bags, vintage brandless iron buttons, hidden rivets, peek-a-boo selvedge detail, selvedge detail at BOTH sides of the fly, chain stitching and so many more! The cutting is a slim mid-high rise lightly tapered look, fitted correctly for me according to measurements provided. The selvedge ID is pinkish red which is a nice touch. Fabric is medium 15oz, feels to me like a 17oz which is also a medium IMO towards the thicker side. Jeans are considered very dark, must been rope dyed more than 20 times. As dark as my brand new Momotaros, darker than my Samurais and Oni/Tanuki Collabs with a tint of green cast noticed under strong white light. Slubs is medium with no neps. Good balance character in the fabric. What are the cons then? Not much for purist like me. I would have loved to have orange/yellow contrasting stitch threads. The fabric to be unsanforized to achieve some leg twist and keeping some of the hairy fibres. Lack of a back pocket lining. That is about it. The lack of arcuates is nice for me, however my particular pair is missing the rear (D) embroidery, does not bother me much anyway. Construction is flawless, as with all japanese jeans. Do not forget we are talking about a pair of jeans at this price point and the cons I have highlighted are usually found on jeans that cost upwards of $300. I have 20 selvedge jeans and a number of jackets and if you ask me to give this a price by appraisal of the product itself, it would befit somewhere around $200-$250. I have serious urge to make purchase of more pieces if not for my already too many pairs that are awaiting its turn to be activated. Sometimes I do wish I am an octopus and I can fade 4 pairs at once.

I've had a test pair since July. I'm a husky boy--normally a tag size 38, but a 36 in these--and would call them a slim taper cut. The cut is nicely proportioned, with room enough in the hips that "ball crushing" is not a concern. I'd call them a mid-rise so no concerns with inadvertently flashing any crack when squatting. On close inspection I can find no fault in construction--straight lines, good stitching, no loose threads or rivets. Everything is where it should be. Pockets are deep, raise belt loops, hidden rivets, etc. This is mid-weight denim--15oz according to specs--but it's a tighter weave, so I don't anticipate a lot of stretch. They're a great pair of jeans. Because of the smooth texture, dark & uniform color and trim cut, they're my go-to for "smart casual" outfits.

Great jeans but runs small
I have to agree with all the other posters who said the jeans run small compared to the sizing chart. The size 32 is bang on 32 inches in the waist and not 33.5 (and that's measured with the waistband flat and level with the back). You lose about half an inch on the thigh and leg opening as well. It's almost as if the measurement chart was drawn up on the raw denim before 'rinse'. Had I known, I would have sized up one (maybe even 2). Shipping back to the US is prohibitive (from Australia) and due to the delay in shipping, I'm past the 30 day return (I only received it today). I suppose I could make it work if it stretches back to raw denim size, it's going to make for a very uncomfortable break in.

Comfort: Initially, they are stiff. After wearing and washing them, they are a lot more comfortable. No comfort issues with walking, sitting, or doing chores.  Aesthetics: They get lighter with wear and wash. Lots of character starts showing with age. They look good, not much more to say about that.  Measurements: Here is a concise graphic to show you the current measurements of my pre-production / prototype jeans. I am going to report the sizes with the pants laid flat on the ground. For me, the waist fits true-to-size (32”). With the pants laid out, the waist measures ~16.25 inches from side-to-side. No complaints about fit.
search

Ending Notes: Front pockets are kind of tight. The 15-ounce denim is great for colder months. I recommend wearing them cuffed. No problems with quality. The right pocket shows some wear but is still structurally sound after the knife carrying.  Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

OK guys, my pair just arrived and this is a totally legit review from a first-time customer. The fit These pants are labeled as slim fit in the description. But personally, I feel that these are more classic/relaxed fit. For comparison, I usually wear Levi's 511 and 512 and these ones are definitely a bit roomier in the thigh and calf regions. I weigh 160lbs and squatting close to 300lbs so I definitely do not skip my legs, so believe me when I say that these are not exactly slim fit. But this is okay for me because I plan on rocking these with a pin-roll cuff to go with my boots and sneakers. The size I read a lot of the comments before buying my pair and I noticed that a lot of people were complaining about the jeans either being too tight or too loose. I would recommend you guys measure your waist to determine which size to order. I think the sizing chart was really helpful. I usually wear size 32 waist for the Levi's 511 and 512 but, according to the sizing chart, I ordered size 33 waist and it fits perfectly. My guess is that most people ordered whichever size they "thought" was their size and did not even bother to read the sizing chart (yes, I actually did measure myself and ordered the recommended size according to the sizing chart). The Quality The quality of the material and the wash is definitely above average. Just running my fingers along the pants, I can tell that the material is very sturdy and of high quality (as expected from Japanese made products). From my visual inspection, I can tell that the stitching is absolutely flawless. I ordered the indigo pair and the wash is exactly what is shown. For this price and quality, I give this 10/10 and would definitely buy again

Great quality,but incorrect sizing chart
The quality of these jeans are great. But as many have mentioned, these jeans run small. I picked my size based on the measurement chart. However, in my experience, the jeans didn't match the measurement chart at all. I purchased a 31, expecting the waist to be 32.5" based on the measurement chart. The jeans I received had a waist measurement of 30".

CoryTheGlorySame thing for me huge waste of time and money what's the point of a sizing chart if it isn't accurate and they don't send a return label they clearly don't want people returning anything.

CoryTheGloryCareful how you measure the waist. Line up the front waist flush with the back then measure. Remember, the waist measurement is the circumference, so you have to either follow the curve or completely straighten it out to measure it more accurately. You will probably get about 1" or 2" more to your measurement by doing it correctly. See this: https://youtu.be/tHBdZvj6maA?t=50

I've heard buying raw denim can be a headache and a way to waste a lot of time and money trying to find the right fit and specs. These are my first pair of raw or selvedge denim and they are now my favorite pair of jeans, feels like I got lucky. The fit is perfect for me, a relaxed slim taper, feels like a mature slim fit. The fabric just feels high quality, great thickness, pretty stout but not too thick; wears in and molds to your body quickly. I've been pretty much wearing them non-stop, may buy another pair as a spare.
