I'm a pretty big dude, ~280lbs. I've always worried about collapsible poles, well, collapsing on me mid climb. Are there any bigger folks here that can chime in with regards to the strength and durability of the compressing fittings?

StarkRavingMadWhat other poles have you used and what has been your experience? I don't want to discourage you from going light, but to be safe you might be better with heavier-duty poles overall (not just talking about the locking mechanism). You definitely don't want to go lighter, like the $200 Gossamer Gear poles.
However, I am 200lbs and have used these with a 40+lb backpack for mountaineering trips. I wouldn't recommend these for mountaineering in general, but I wanted to test them out and they held up just fine. Maybe others here can chime in?

StarkRavingMadI'm not quite that big, but I did intentionally put a lot of weight on the poles while testing and they held up fine. At first, they slipped a little, but after tightening them a bit more, I didn't experience any slipping when trying hard to make them slip and none while hiking with them.
