Hold the Fort...is it still a MK2?
Mostly still a mk2 with updates here and there from the other models. This one is more of a Frankenstein than the previous T-X0 drop. I'm going to assume these changes are what leads to their super low driver distortion too, especially in the lows. It's a much cleaner experience than what I'm used to hearing from this family headphones.
Most of the distortion plots I've seen for the T50 and T60 range from 5 to 10% in spots (which is audible). This T-X0 at worst, maxes at 1% and is much lower elsewhere, making this one of the cleanest Tx0 variants in their "base" form.
I have my work camera so I'll have some shots to post later tonight if I can get this lightbox built.
Interesting, I would have liked to see them shift to a MK3 with a drop headband much like Dekoni's Blue with the Dekoni logo or just all black with an engraved one like the T60RP.
My hope was on the next revision was to have an all black MK3 and shift to plusher angled pads along with a TRRS. The TRS in the current models is a PCB style one with the housing fashioned to fit perfectly. Fostex would have to source a 4-PIN version or use one like in the T60RP which would be easier as they already have the parts on hand.
If they went full MK3 and balanced then I would happily pay upwards of $200 as I am then getting something unique. The MK2 driver is alright too and the best platform for an Argon.
Perhaps it would be good to have this MK2 driver version and the also have a revised MK3 balanced one?
These are full mk3s except the headband
No, they're not. The headband is from a mk2. The earcups (wiring and jack port) are from a mk2. The cable is based on the mk2. The driver housing and baffle plate are from a mk3. The driver itself is the mk3-style with it's white filter (driver is the same between mk2 and mk3). Pads are from a T60 (and have a screen, stock mk2 pads didn't). Comfort strap, tuning foam weights, hybrid pads, shorter 2m stock cable, addl. cup damping, and paint job are unique to the T-X0.
Pretty much a Frankenstein, but still a good base to start from considering all things.
The earcups use the same mold as the mk2 and are identical. Jack port is also identical between the mk2 and mk3. You also say the cable is 'based on the mk2', but the mk2 and mk3 both came with the same black cable, however the mk3 came with an extra orange cable. The only difference is the headband.
Tyll did a great write-up in all their differences: https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/diyers-delight-fostex-t50rp-mk3 .
These cables were known to have connection issues and it was either due to the coating on the plug and/or the jack, I can't remember which. For whatever reason, the black cable doesn't have this problem, is what I was trying to get at since the cable here only comes with the T-X0.
