The Drop + grell OAE1 Signature headphones are finally here, and we couldn’t be more excited!
It has been a long journey to get to this point. Together with Axel, we’ve shown the headphones at a number of shows, received feedback from trusted ears such as Jude Mansila of Head-fi.org, and tweaked the tuning along the way.
The OAE1 Signature are collectors items and limited to 1,000 units in total. All Signature headphones are individually measured before leaving the factory and the measurements are included inside the package. The Signature version also comes with two high quality cables, a carrying case, and as the name says—the headphones have Axel’s signature on them.
The headphones come with a 2-year warranty and our 30 day return policy applies to OAE1 Signature as well.
One goal with this launch was to minimize the wait time until the OAE1 Signature arrives. The headphones are in production and expected to arrive to our warehouse mid-June, and ship shortly thereafter to everyone. We look forward to getting these into your hands!
Edit to add: All orders, including international, will be shipping free! If you already purchased and paid for shipping, that cost will be refunded to you automatically.
What in the world is taking so long to get these back in stock, I’ve sent a couple of emails over the past months and I still haven’t gotten any response back from drop 🤷🏾
After two months of daily using my 0EA1, the right earcup has detached from the headband (2-3mm gap) at the connection point to the headband. See photos below:

How can I get this fixed?
08-22-24 Edit: I contacted Grell Audio and in almost no time, I received a response back from Mr. Axel Grell with information on the procedure to resolve the issue. Kudos!!!
I wanted to share my own measurements that compared these to well known headphones such as the HD 600 and Hifiman Sundara as a reference point. The measurements taken were done on my EARS Rig with custom compensation derived from Innerfidelity's custom compensation done in collaboration with Harman before Tyll Hertsens retired. This compensation was developed with his HATS in a acoustically treated room with two speakers towed in that they knew measured flat in anechoic conditions. This compensation is similar to harman but slightly different as there will be no bass hump and measurements will look slightly darker than what you'd see from say Crinacle.
For the most parts this should be used specifically for comparison sake to well known and rigorously measured headphones and not as a professional benchmark.
The HD 600 used is a metal mesh variant pre 2020 with decent condition pads with the old marble finish. The Hifiman Sundara is a pre pad revision copy seldom used. These headphones are an ideal reference point for both their reputation and to represent tuning that is more closely aligned with NON bass shelf harman target.
Since this hasn't been measured extensively (There's only 1000 units), I wanted to provide extra resources to potential future buyers. Also the cool thing is I want to investigate how the removing the dampening felt effects the response, as many have said this headphone is somewhat too dark.

The red is without the felt
Blue is with the felt (Stock)
Black is a reference.
As you can see you get much more energy above 5khz around 7db+ and beyond without the felt, but it also becomes more bass heavy as well 4+ db or so. The headphones seem a little peeky (Slightly without) but too dark with. I'd like to see a middle ground here personally. The felt on the driver is around 3/4 mm thick. maybe halving that would yield better results.
If Grell Audio could tune this closer to DF/harman I think this would amazing for audio professionals.
Although from what I understand according to Grell Audio's compensation a stock OAE1 measures completely flat, and follows some type of front oriented diffuse field response. I guess they play some type of DF signal through towed in fron oriented speakers? I don't know, without confirmation well just have to wait and see. Hopefully Axell Grell could clarify.
I somewhat understand the idea that these need to be compensated differently than normal headphones due to the towed in drivers, but I'm not a subject matter expert.
As for my listening impressions without the felt ~ it's was slightly a bit splashy in the 10khz + range and slightly more boomy in the bass but I overall preferred this and it sounded quite a bit more neutral, you can get much more treble this way. It's closer to what I'm used to, despite growing to enjoy the stock sound. Want to let people know that this is an option for people who want more treble. It's just adhesive tape and the mod is completely reversible.
TekronXHart Audio is a great shop.
I especially like that they'll happily do custom variants of pretty much everything they sell.
I use the Hart splits for all of my other cans, so I ordered the CST-HD-6-C in 18".
Received my pair today here in Japan.
At first I was shocked how muddy and aggressive the bass was,
but I realized that the cable wasn't plugged in properly (you can feel the click when it's plugged in all the way).
Once the cable was in the right position, although I still feel that the bass is a bit aggressive to my taste, the muddiness disappeared, which made me happier than ever.
Purchasing a headphone without auditioning is a risk, but looks like my decision was correct.
FYI
DAC/AMP: RME ADI-2 DAC FS
Cable: Stock balanced cable converted to 6.3mm via an adapter (balanced cable sounded clearer than the stock single ended cable)
Can05Thanks. I was surprised because this is the first time something like this has happened to me. (I had a bad feeling because the local tracking number showed Germany as the shipping source.)
Honestly, I think it is useless to go from the US to Germany once lol.
Anyone from South America get their shipment yet?
I do not see any change in status on my purchase order, it has been the same since July 5.
