We cooked up a little something for your grell audio headphones! We constantly strive for perfection, and to reward our loyal users we have released a new firmware update, now available from the SoundID app! Firmware release log: https://grellaudio.com/en/content/view/Firmware%20Update%20Logs

EDIT 5/11/2022, Firmware 2.8.0: • Improved Bluetooth connection stability between earpieces… should help with dropouts and stutters! • Improved the command for ending calls (hold either touch field for 2S) to make it more intentional and less accidental. • Now you can hold the right touch field for 10 seconds to forget all Bluetooth pairings and connect fresh, or both left and right touch fields to reset everything to factory.

EDIT 4/13/2022, Firmware 2.7.0: • Improved preservation of battery charge in-between days of usage 1/13/2022: • Better connection stability • Increased volume range: 4dB (with a change in the SoundID app this will add 7dB in total) • Modified tap gesture: 160ms -> 240ms (The "tap" can be longer, more forgiving and responsive!) • Simplified ANC and NAR control • LHDC "license invalid" fix from Savitech (LHDC is working! And sounds great!!!)

Sonarworks also released a new app update (for both iOS and Android) which includes the following things to improve the Over The Air Update (OTAU) experience: • Silent audio playback by the app during OTAU process (The app self-maintains a good data connection to the earbuds) • Timeout and retry mechanism for separate stages of OTAU process (if there’s an error, you don’t have to start over from the beginning)

A thank you goes to Sonarworks who have been applying hotfixes since launch, collaborating and working hard with us! Drop has also been here, keeping us informed and pointing us to posts we have missed, as well as being great partners in the sales process. Another big thanks to our patrons (that means you!), we listened to your feedback and this should make your experience nicer! It’s always good to think about what you’re thankful for at the start of a new year, and of course make resolutions 😉 Bonus: Anyone else notice the green “Pairing” knife next to the Bluetooth headphones? 🤣

EvshrugCould you explain what "Simplified ANC and NAR control" mean? I haven't noticed any difference in toggling NAR. Right now, if I power down my pair and turn them back on, it always reverts back to ANC.

LD_TypeIt doesn't affect the touch gestures: It just shuts off ANC or NAR when another mode (NAR or ANC) is selected, or when the active mode is selected for the second time.

EvshrugLhdc still isn't working for me. I bought a new phone to get the most out of the grell tws, but unfortunately I'm stuck on aptx adaptive. My phone is an oppo find x2 pro. Ldhc doesn't show on Bluetooth settings for drop grell tws and when i select lhdc in developer settings, the grell tws still doesn't change to lhdc.

EvshrugA suggestion: a way to power them off and on without the charging box would be nice. I think right now you have to unpair them, but even then it could leave battery draining processing on. This is so you can stuff them in a pocket without worrying about accidentally touch gesturing them or running down the batteries with ANC/transparent

EvshrugSoundID app for android seems to still need some debugging. After the 1st time running the "Hearing test", all subsequent retake of the test crashes on 70-73%. (the app just froze, needing a forced close) As a quick fix, it would be great if it would just save the choices of each step instead of needing a restart from the beginning on every retake (it can take quite a while, especially when you're in the middle of a city... there's no practical place with no background sound).

WhisperedThanks for the heads up! That is the first I’ve heard of that issue, but if it happens to multiple people, then it might benefit anyone who uses SoundID with their headphones. Quick thing you could try, though, in case it’s just your copy of SoundID… try deleting the app and downloading it from the Google play store again? Sometimes these kinds of bugs are from random interactions with other system resources, but also sometimes it’s just a corrupted install. And anyway, it’s a fast and easy thing to try 🤷‍♂️ @silentrecorder

DefohnHmm, I’m not personally familiar with Oppo’s smartphones… it might take some time to look into this, but just curious in the meanwhile, does downloading the FiiO Music app give you the option of LHDC? Apparently, Savitech is working on more apps to enable LHDC in the near future as well (hopefully for iOS too, because that’s what I have).

EvshrugI'm having issues with the audio and mic when connected to my Surface Pro 8. Not sure what codec is being used, but I notice the audio quality is not quite as good as when paired to my phone. Also, after a while, the microphone quality goes completely down the drain and no one can understand what I'm saying during calls. This only happens when paired to my SP8, it works perfectly fine when paired to my phone.

EvshrugQuick question… for those switching to the Grell TWS1s who are used to using AirPods and who use IEM’s for more than just listening to music, what are the possibilities of the native sounds (iOS or android) being an option instead of the quick 2 tones the Grell TWS1’s currently use as audio notification. I have different sounds assigned to different actions - so one sound for email received, another for email sent, another for a text received, etc. That functionality of being able to audibly discern each unique notification is lost with the 2 quick tones.

LD_TypeIt does sound like it's using an unexpected codec... does the issue persist after you shut the bluetooth off on your Surface Pro, and then connect again? @grobdoe Apple has unique access to iOS system sounds, so right now changing the control tones on the Drop + grell TWS1X isn't possible without putting a new sound in the firmware code. However, the notification sounds from your phone should respect your system settings... I just sent myself a test email and had someone text me, and they used my custom notification sounds.

EvshrugHey Everyone! We had a number of requests to explain the touch controls, so we made a video to demonstrate them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg2NQsdGXYY&list=PL0PJoPgAcdsDOWacfqdRpLVqxBcBiQ1e5&index=4 While we were at it, I also filmed other videos to show the unboxing: https://youtu.be/bfuerWLdGlc Pairing instructions: https://youtu.be/gFWy4aCn97k and firmware update process: https://youtu.be/iJr3hZOv_b4

EvshrugFYI… this is not always the case. With an iPhone 13 pro the sounds seem to alternate between the native iOS custom assigned notification sounds and the Grell standard 2 quick tones. Not sure why, and maybe having to reset / repair (seemingly often) impacts this, but it’s definitely not always the iOS tones.

EvshrugNew Firmware 2.7.0! Good news: we’ve adjusted the TWS1X to preserve battery life better in-between uses! We still have a few other improvements planned, and are working to code them.

EvshrugDoesn't seem to help any in my case. Unit still often just died out of nowhere within 2-3 hours. Another problem is that it simply won't reconnect every time I went out of range a couple of minutes for coffee. The sound is great after calibration, but all these problems is just plain annoying for a unit of this price bracket.

WhisperedHey Whispered, the firmware update 2.7.0 goes into deep sleep mode faster than before, so that the battery case should still have a charge even if you don’t use the headphones for a week. No matter what firmware version though, you should be getting twice that music playback runtime or more, even if you are using the buds with ANC active! 6-8 hours! And four recharges in the case. If you time the playback time and it only lasts literally two hours, you should see about getting your unit exchanged. If it makes 6 hours feel like two hours… you’re welcome! If you stay out of range and disconnected from a Bluetooth source, eventually the headset goes to sleep after a few minutes to save battery. It’s not meant to be like a hearing aid where it will stay on even if nothing is playing. If you just want to have ANC quiet for awhile, I would recommend keeping your phone or other source near enough to transmit a silent “song” on repeat.

New update! Firmware 2.8.0 improves the connection between the left and right earbuds, which in turn should improve playback without mono-audio, stutters, and make reset/unpairing commands more responsive. Follow the SoundID in-app instructions. You will be asked to “forget” the pairing with your smart device, and continue the update within 60 seconds of establishing a fresh pairing. Video walkthrough of the pairing process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJr3hZOv_b4

EvshrugKudos for the great what-seems-like-one-man-singlehandedly prolific support for the Drop + Grells. I can only imagine the number of customers you've saved, both for themselves and for Drop.

pbergonziIt is not every day I get kudos, thank you! I think Axel hired me because he knows I was on Drop and Head-Fi pretty much everyday anyway 😅 It’s something I do well, and Axel is good with headphones, so I’m all to happy to have a purpose and take some of the load off him so he can keep working on more cool stuff. I’m here for the folks, to serve as a bridge between what customers want and what Axel is innovating. I have to say, I think this new firmware is going to save me some work 😂. I took a 1 hour 15 minute walk outside in my park today (outside is harder on Bluetooth; nothing/ few things to bounce signal off of!), no skips or stutters!
