Species:  Headphoneus Openness This is a very peculiar animal, the open-back headphone.  When you first encounter this headphone, you wonder how it evolved to be… Seemingly, the design is not what you would imagine in a headphone.  The cups are vented so we call them “open-back.” They let music out and they let external sound in.   Why would you do this?  For the very best sound.   An open-back headphone knocks down the walls around the speakers.  It allows air and energy to move freely. Walls and surfaces are the enemies to even, clear sound because they reflect sound waves and can cancel out good sound.   With an open back headphone, you get the advantages of headphones (personal listening, low power, lightweight gear) but with the advantages of an open listening area with speakers (great treble extension, sense of “air,” openness and natural sound decay). The Audiophilius Studius (trained audiophile) has known about the evolved open-back design for a long time.  Yet this still remains a secret from many to this very day. The Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE-35X’s mission is to get the word out about great open back headphone audiophile sound, to everyone. HiFiMAN HE-300  > Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE-350  > Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE-35X Based on the entry level HiFiMAN HE-300, we introduced the Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE-350 back in 2016.  We sold over 10,000 pairs. The HE-350 became the first step in high fidelity sound- a more neutral, linear response for greater reproduction accuracy.  However, from feedback and reviews, there were some desired improvements to comfort, durability, & sound signature. Comfort is largely determined by headband and ear pads.  While the headband has always gotten high marks, the pads were relatively stiff and could have used some changes. We now include the same hybrid pads found on the HE-400i with softer cushioning, angled design, and a mix of velour, pleather, and breathable fenestrated pleather.   Community Input for Warmer Output: The treble has been tamed through use of an electrical high-pass filter tuning circuit to make for a warmer sound signature when combined with the new hybrid pads.  The circuit was developed by a community member (Solderdude) as a way to reduce the 6-7k treble peak of the original HE-350. Durability Changes:
  • Reinforced headband yokes- now with metal inserts
  • 3.5mm connectors in the earcups (previously they were 2.5mm, easier to break if dropped)

How we enjoy the product - At Massdrop HQ, we’ve been enjoying the HE-35X on the Cavalli Tube Hybrid and THX AAA 789 headphone amps.  The CTH adds a nice touch of warmth and extra body to the sound. The amp has plenty of gain for these headphones and vocals really shine with this combo. The newly revised HE-35X brings you even more comfort, performance, durability, and a crowd-pleasing sound signature.  We hope this new model will prove to be a great entry point for anyone new to open back headphones or for anyone that has been on the fence about HE350. One final thing! As you may have seen today, we announced a new “Launch” pricing structure for new Massdrop Made products. This product is available at $90 for the next 30 days or until the first 750 are sold, so act fast!

https://www.berklee.edu Here you go D-bag in major. While you are at it might wanna brush up on them literary skills.
You answered my question: this particular model uses dynamic drivers, not planar-magnetic. Ah well, back to the Sundaras. Thanks for this intel, eh.

And here I am still waiting for a closed back over-the-ear portable. I thought we might have seen such a collab from Sennheiser by now. I can still hope. So many open backs, amps, dacs, home listening, etc. which I love to see as well. Just *really* would love to see something in the audio collabs that actually works for portable use.

What's put me off of the Thinksound headphones is the on-ear aspect. They look and supposedly sound pretty great but I so much prefer over ears (even though the OG momentums have small cups, they are still over ear on me) - thanks for the recommendation though!

I fully concur. They are my “at work” (office, library, archives) set, as well as my vacation travel set.

If you don't have the hifiman HE4xx they are the best that massdrop makes. They are also a fundamentaly different technology to the other two you have. They are Planar Magnetic wich I love. (sorry if this isn't what you are looking for)

I can now definitely say that if you are looking for cans with flavor, the Meze Nior are a top choice. I also have all the same headphones you’ve mentioned, plus more. But if were somehow only left with the 4XX, Meze Nior and ATH-R70x I’d be ok with that. I recall reading a comment saying along the lines that, the Meze Classic was a headphone that satisfied their “headphone fever” and I can see why. Again, if I could somehow magicly transform my 350’s to 35X I would, only because I’m a headphone addict. Cant wait to see what is found when people get their hands on these and take them apart.

Are the headphone active noise cancelling? i would like to study sometimes without music and also without ambient noise

BserLarryThese will be the opposite. They are open back will mean you'll be able to hear a lot of outside noise and will also bleed a lot of noise to your surroundings. If you're in a place where there's a lot of noise or people I'd suggest against these.

ColbraYes but please remember although a matter of preference open back headphones do sound better than closed. Not always but most.

I find this drop to be comical at the least. I pre-ordered the he-350 and waited many months for it, excited for all that was promised. What I got was a 100 dollar headache... The hardest pads I've ever put over my ears coupled with a fragile, yet tight clamping headband. And also, the most painful highs I've ever experienced. I tried to sell my 100 dollar headphones for over a month, ended up only getting 30 or 40 dollars out of them. Now the same headphones are back and fixed and less money. While I appreciate that hifiman makes revisions and improves their products, I wish that I could have just bought a working product in the first place. It's frustrating for people like me who bought he 350's and the 560 rev2 to watch new revisions come out later with everything fixed. I feel like I have been punished for being an early adopter of the products.
DurzaI bought an HD650 at $319 and an HE300 v2 at $160... both sold for much more than that prior... old tech gets cheaper... you can pick up successors to both here for less than $300... I have no regrets as this is just how the world works... nothing to get bitter over

DurzaI mean that is the risk you take when getting the first batch on these drops. Why I always wait for other brave souls who give reviews and so on. Yeah it sucks but its just like any other product you buy, there is a chance you not going to like it as much as you thought. But they went back and looked at every ones feedback and improved it. Which is great, also they are not cheaper $90 price is launch price and will be $120 after April 18th

CokemanThey look uncompensated. It looks like they boosted the bass a bit from the 350 and added some upper midrange/lower treble. The bass looks boosted about 5-10dB, so nothing over the top, kind of expected from something like the Olive-Welti curve. It would be nice to have some compensated curves to look at as uncompensated ones tend to always look like there is a big 4k-ish spike.

As someone who really knows nothing about headphones I have a question. Would these be fine without a DAC or is there value in getting a DAC along with these? If so can anyone reccomend a dac for these under $300?

H4ckeyA dac is dependent on your source and it’s processing not the headphones. As for someone here recommending you buy an Apple adapter in regards to your initial query...well thats pretty much whats wrong with asking advice on the interwebs.

It has an inbulit DAC: https://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/lightning-adapter-audio-quality.htm One more review: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-apple-vs-google-usb-c-headphone-adapters.5541/ Instead of investing in a pricey DAC, this would be a great start. In any case, driving these HPs shouldn't be an issue because they are low impedance. These work on Windows too. I run my HD 6xx and RHA T20 IEM on this adapter these days.

Just got mine from the post office. First impression: Well worth the price! They seem to like EDM and some Rap (depends on the vocalist).

I'm fairly impressed with the bass output in these Hifiman cans. Especially with them being open backed. I <3 the heck out of my 99 Noir set. Absolutely 100% worth the cost, especially after I replaced the pads with some overly large and somewhat cheap Brainwavz sheepskins and a balanced cable (XLR4 > *). My only complaint? Those motherfuckers eat my hair if I forget to pony-tail before putting them on. The first time that happened... so painful... both sides caught locks of hair between the cups and the band when removing the cans.

FayneReceived mine yesterday.Your first impressions were spot on! Good deal for $90.Not sure I could recommend at $120. Listening to mine balanced(XLR) Loxjie P20. They remind me of the SHP9500 with better bass.

Philips SHP9500 vs HIFIMAN HE-35X, What is better?

BlagoI will start by saying I am new to audio above the basic level. I will do my best to describe the differences. I have both, using them with my PC via a DAC-X6 over USB and volume at 3 o clock. Both feel comfortable in different ways. I wear a size L/XL fitted hat. The HE-35X clamp to my head more while the SHP9500 just kind of sit there and you almost don't notice them on your head. Both have ear pads that I find as "itchy" so both will be replaced with Brainwavz pads (as soon as I figure out how to take the pads off the HE-35X without destroying them). The SHP9500 are a tad louder and have clearer highs though I feel the highs can be a little harsh at higher volumes. The HE-35X have more pronounced bass, but the highs seem "muddy"? I don't regret buying either pair. That said, I do plan on buying a more expensive pair of headphones to see if they are any better. Hope that helps.
