We teamed up with HIFIMAN to redefine the entry point for planar magnetic headphones. Taking the best elements from our HE4XX and HE5XX models—and incorporating several all-new components—we created the Drop + HIFIMAN HE-X4. An optimal blend of accessibility and audio quality, it’s a planar magnetic standout that impresses on its own or paired with an amp. Based on the HE4XX’s classic build, the HE-X4 features earcups that HIFIMAN listeners know and love, plus an updated headband for improved sturdiness and comfort. On the sonic side, dual-sided magnet arrays similar to that of the HE5XX help the HE-X4 achieve improved sensitivity over the HE4XX—with a distinctly warm and subtly dark tone all its own.
Dual-Sided Magnetic Drivers in a Sturdy Design
In any pair of planar magnetic headphones, the listening experience is defined by the drivers. In the HE-X4, the drivers don’t disappoint. For uncompromising responsiveness and sensitivity, we implemented a dual-sided magnet driver array that uses magnets on both sides of the diaphragm membrane to generate sound waves. We also tuned each driver for maximum efficiency to minimize distortion and give the HE-X4 a unique sonic character. On the exterior, the HE-X4 retains much of what made the HE4XX a fan-favorite: large earcups, plush earpads, and a lightweight build. Where it surpasses its predecessor is the headband. We worked closely with HIFIMAN to make the slider connections more durable and improve headband strength overall—giving the HE-X4 uncompromising comfort alongside immersive sound.
HIFIMAN: For Audiophiles, By Audiophiles
Founded in New York City in 2007, HIFIMAN has always kept its ears close to the audiophile community. Case and point: Dr. Fang, company founder and head engineer. Dr. Fang started out as an active contributor on Head-Fi, regularly attending local meetups while pursuing his doctorate at Columbia. When he realized his PhD research could be relevant to his passion—the music-listening experience and the audiophile products that improve it—he started talking with forum members and meetup attendees about what they’d like to see in the next generation of headphones. With his first designs, HIFIMAN was born. In the few short years since its inception, HIFIMAN has released several highly regarded audio products, all while keeping close ties with the audiophile community. At Drop, we couldn’t imagine a better way of doing things.

Have they be redesigned/fix or will they, over time, suffer the same problem like my previous pair of 4XX - screws holding caps loosen over time and fall off. I needed to screw them back together every day. Yokes were actually bigger then caps and I think that there was a bit too much tension from metal springiness involved. After some time they wouldn't even last whole day of normal use and one day I was so pissed and tired of rebuilding them over and over and over again that I throw them into garbage bin. IMHO those are simple an example of bad engineering, or perhaps case of using parts that weren't actually designed to work together in the first place.
