this is a the sine qua non MD purchase for under $200 that you don't have to wait months to join the drop then a few more for the delivery. for the price, the build quality is surprisingly good with sturdy metal parts (vis the K 7XXs which can appear flimsy). similar to other reviews, this is my 1st foray into planars and i'm glad these are the cans that set the standard (now looking forward to fostex t50rp variants). although it feels heavier carrying the headphones around, you don't feel the same heft once you put them on since the pads provide substantial comfort (plus there are good aftermarket replacements once the need arises). the wire is just the right length for desktop use with the aune x1s amp. I was actually looking at the hifiman he-400i around the same time and as serendipity would have it, I got the notification for this drop. although I won't be able to compare the sound, I personally think the HE4XX look much better and cost a few $ less. I prefer this for modern music vis the K 7XX but are just as capable for jazz/classical genres. this can also be plugged directly into your phone/tablet without the same sound degradation of the K 7XX. 7/14/18 update-had to knock off 1 star due to the loose screw after 1 month of use. the adjusting mechanism is a bit stiff so probably caused more pressure on the screws during the few times I tried to adjust them. I was hoping not to fall prey to the hifiman QC gremlin but it appears this is a rampant issue (not just limited to this model). 12/12/19 update-had to replace the cable since the sound was cutting on and off (thanks Neomusica). i'm glad it just needed a replacement cable but this is now the 2nd build quality issue I've had since ownership (this is the only cable I've replaced so far out of necessity/other headphones I swapped cables more for aesthetic reasons/length requirements). I was willing to put a few more bucks into this purchase because I still enjoy listening to these cans (currently doing some comparative listening vs the 58Xs that I just received). I hope they have improved the build quality of these since I bought them in april 2018.
