The stock sound wasn't to my liking but when I changed to Mr. Speakers Lambskin Alpha pads I was impressed and when I got ZMF Lambskin Ori pads I was blown away. The tonality is incredible. They still don't have the low-end weight to carry some heavier music and so I still prefer HD650's or other headphones for a lot of rock and some other types of music but I was shocked to find that these have become my go-to cans for female vocals, singer/songwriter, and other instrumental music.
My only gripe is that I feel like the soundstage can lack cohesion. It's not terrible but, more than any other headphone I have, the sound seems to be "around" my head with some sounds existing in undefined space. Instead of having the soundstage in front of me, I feel as though I'm "in" the soundstage. With the stock pads this was really a problem because the strong instrument separation, which is usually a good thing, makes the sound feel very disconnected.
Overall, a very comfortable, seemingly well-built headphone with a ton of potential.
