Not a bad pair at all. After owning them for 1 month, and having the HD 6xx, i can say: +the sound is airy +a good level of overall detail +the sound-stage is very nice - a decent choice for gaming - i find their sound signature a bit thin for my taste - the highs sound artificial at times - using them for longer periods can become tiring due to too much detail. Overall: An OK buy, but from my perspective HD 6xx are a better buy! Last edit 16 May 2019: keeping the review to 4 stars. Even if this pair become my favorite desk pair, I am having some build quality. First the plastic part covering left metal arc has come off because of bad glue, then the cable is slowly failing - interrupting on left side with occasional screeching. spent another 20USD for a reasonable cable on Aliexpress witch seems much better build. I never had a decent HPs fail cable before, I always take care of them. IDK drop & Hifiman, spend 10$ more and improve the build quality. These are not very solid material and build wise, the sound is still fine.

CodrinI own the HE-400i and I agree with most of what you're saying on the pros. HD6xx is a better buy in my opinion because of the bad reputation on the yolk tend to break on HE-400i. Otherwise these cans are on the same level. Switching from one to another is more of a side grade than upgrade. But I would spend money on HD 6xx because those seems to be tougher. Also the HE-400i is more comfortable. HD6xx Clam force is too much and the foam is worse and not as comfortable as He-400i foam pad

TuanLeThank you TuanLe, please be aware that the clamp force on HD 6xx can and will decrease in time. You can optionally set them on a box over a few nights and they will be much more comfy. Anyway, i kind of regret having them both, but I will keep them nonetheless.
So far i can set them up as: - 4xx for Morning/Day-time listening/Occasional gaming - 6xx for Evening listening or relaxing sweet sound during rains - SHP9500 as back-up pair - Takstar pro 80s for the office - the rest on the go

CodrinHi Codrin, I recently found out that after 2015, the HE400i changed the designed. They used to have a metal back plate with the SMC connectors, but after 2015, together with the change to 2.5mm connector, they removed the backplate. That means after the grill you will see the magnets array rightaway w/o having a holed/ grilled metal plate. The result is that the newer He-400i has less bass, and rolled off much sooner (read somewhere that it start rolling at 100-150hz) and it does make sense with what i hear. So I'm wondering if the HE4XX driver is the same as old HE400i (have the backplate) or as the new He400i (no back plate). Could you do me a favor and look thru the grill to see if there is a back plate there or you can see the magnet array right away ? (may be there is a layer of thin cloth between the grill and the exposed magnet). Just curious whether the He4XX have more bass than the newer He 400i. Most review on the internet seems to ignore the fact that there are 2 versions of the He-400i It's a pity because if the He-400i really have that flat bass to sub bass it would've been a perfect headphones because it is much more fun than the HD6xx IMO which can be boring. After this headphone i would say good bye to Sennheiser because it seems like their sound signature is not for me, kinda overated and outdated. The He-400i does take EQ much better than HD6xx thou. You can EQ the low freq to a much better effect than the Hd6xx (EQ doesn't change much, if you EQ too much bass it distorts). However interestingly on the youtube video headphone test the He-400i only response till 25hz while HD6xx go to 21Hz before all the rumble disappear (this is at medium listening level that does not cause distortion in the test, if i turn up the volume to the max the He-400i seems to response till 22-21hz but has distortion/ driver buzzing below 30hz with all the rumbling)

TuanLeSorry for the late reply. You are correct in your suspicion: There is no additional plate under the grills : the magnets are visible right away!
