Just got these today. This evening, using Getz-Gilberto's "Girl from Ipanema," comparing the HE4XX to the AudioTechnica ATH-A900X and Sennheiser HD-445. Realizing also the HE4XX has not been broken in with hours of listening, and my critical audiophile days are long behind me. The HE4XX has the greatest presence and crispness of the group, as revealed by the gentle tapping of Milton Banana's high-hat, and the breath between the lyric lines of Astrud Gilberto's vocals. This reveals the ATH-A900X to be bassier, fuller-sounding, but muddy and lacking in the top end where the HE4XX is clear. The Sennheisers are sonically much closer to the HE4XX: just a touch less toppy. They are so light on my ears that if I were to give equal weight to comfort and audio quality, I'd probably prefer the HD445's. Also, the HE4XX, being planars, are harder to drive to higher volume, though my source (not an audiophile system by any means, but the amp of my Logitech Z-680 PC speakers, is quite loud enough at full blast. I just have to remember to turn it off before plugging any headphones out!
Would recommend to a friend.
