My 3rd pair of DROP headphones... and the best of the bunch.
I started with a pair of 6XXs, then got a Dragonfly Red to drive it—eventually upgrading to the Drop CTH + SDAC, which rocked my world. Truly. I couldn't imagine anything better—although my family could, because they bleed quite a lot. So I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro LEs (250Ω) to have a pair of closed backs—and liked them, although the high end is a little too bright for my personal tastes, but only for music. I found for games and movies, I preferred them because they have a wider soundstage and are more immersive. What they lacked was the same degree of ASMR. There's something about the sounds of the 6XXs that really tickle my ears. I FEEL music in them. But they got me wondering about other sound options—so I wanted to try Planar Magnetics to see how a different approach from the get-go might affect the sound. And? For an all around headphone, these win—but they bleed even worse than the 6XXs. If you're alone in a room—like the 6XXs, they are amazing. But these are as loud on the outside as they are on the inside (they just don't sound good on the outside). However, they have a very wide soundstage, excellent clarity, good bass, and are very comfortable. Better than the Beyerdynamics for most purposes—definitely for music. But they don't isolate on either side—so beware. Everyone will hear your music, if there is anyone around—and you'll hear what's going on around you. In a reasonably quiet room, these are amazing at all volumes and won't disappoint you. And they do offer some of the ASMR of the 6XXs, although when it comes to tone—the 6XXs are pretty special. Nevertheless, if I could choose only one headphone between the 6XXs, the DT770s and these, it would be these. Having started with the 6XXs, these didn't amaze me the same way. They are more multi-purpose for a casual listener—exceeding in games where the increased separation helps make everything sound more 3D. Live music feels more "live". But they don't have the same sonic intimacy of the 6XXs. The Beyerdynamics win on isolation. These are the ones I use the most. They sound the most natural. The 6XXs the most touching. The Beyerdynamics are the family favorite. If there's anyone else in the room—gimme those. At least until I get the Pandas (on order). In the end, for the price you can't get a better set of phones, IMO.
