Boy I wish I saw this coming! Just got the 400i for Father's Day on sale. This could've saved a little money, though I'm not jazzed about the headband here. Aside from that, I would HIGHLY recommend these headphones. ESPECIALLY at this price point. Even at $250 they were a really great deal. A steal even. Not really sure why the MSRP here is $270. IF these are the 400i's then the MSRP is really $449...Unless they happen to be on sale.
From what I read about the differences in 400x models, I think the biggest thing is how they are to drive (and the weight - the 400is are very light). These seem as easy to drive as the 400i and that's a good thing on the go. So again, these are likely an INSANE deal. Far better than the recent Sennheiser hd6xx deal or the Fostex planars. This is a great price for planar magnetic. Really great. Assuming QC on these is good... Honestly the price is so low it makes me worry now (thinking more on it) to be frank.
Not sure why you say its much better deal than the HD6XX, the HD650 sells for $315, the 400i can be had at Ritz camera for $209 new. So $115 discount vs. a $50 discount I don't understand your math. Though with the wait, I don't know if either is close to being an "INSANE deal".
Not sure that's a normal price (there is currently a sale on them). I also believe there's a somewhat silent revision in this model. But typically yes, you're looking at $250 for these when they are on sale. That sale is a GREAT deal. Many people consider that a great deal. A "steal" even (other people's words). So at $170, yes that's what I consider an INSANE deal if $250 is "great."
Very good point about the wait too. I would personally be buying them at $250 from Hifiman direct. I don't trust when I see one vendor with a far lower price than all others (Ritz). So spending an additional $80 right now to avoid the wait. In fact, I already have purchased them at $250 during their last sale.
