My HE4XX arrived not too long before Christmas, which left me in the awkward position of having bought myself a Christmas present.... but wow what a GREAT present. I've given my AKG 701s to my dear wife. I let her try on the HE4XX but she found them a bit too heavy, although she did comment something along the lines of "wow listening to these I think I finally get the whole hi-fi thing".
I find them super comfortable. They fit my big (some would say fat) head very well. They feel much more secure than do the AKGs. Putting the AKGs back on for a quick comparison, I find the HE4XX sound smoother in the the upper midrange and treble, and they seem to have a bit more oomf in the upper bass / lower midrange as well.
Equipment-wise, the HE4XX are fine with my Schiit Fulla-2 and Schiit Magni-3 (neither get above 9 oclock) as well as my Pixel phone.
I was really satisfied with the AKGs for mmm almost 10 years I think, but at the price (almost $100 cheaper than the 400s in Canada) I had to try the HE4XX, and I'm really glad I did.

MonetsChemistCan anyone tell me if these HIFIMAN or the Sennheiser 580 Jubilee sound closest to my aging but still favorite AKG K501 for classical music? Thanks. David

DavidbeaDavidbea, sorry to take 18 weeks to respond!!! I just noticed this today, unfortunately.
I don't have K501s; I have K701s. As well as the HE4xx of course. Anyway, I had a brief listening comparison again just this week, and I find that the high-frequency percussion is certainly more notable on the K701s - for me, too notable; I almost find it "crunchy". Anyway, if you can name a specific classical work that I happen to have on hand (I lean toward choral works, the Baroque, and the modern. The big romantic stuff - Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mahler - tend to be of less interest), I am happy to listen on both and report back to you.
