Is it worth it to get this if I already had the K702?
I think of ordering again the K702 instead of the He-4xx ;)
I used to own the K702 before I sold them and replaced them with the K712. Let’s just say that the AKG’s have been gathering dust ever since the HifiMan’s arrived! Highly recommend, especially if you EQ them a bit.
Hows the bass compared to akg
They definitely have more bass than the 702s. I always found that those headphones just didn’t fill in the lower frequencies enough. They have about the same amount of bass as the 712s, but it’s faster with less distortion, so you can really EQ it up and make it into a warm bassy headphone if that’s what you’re into (it’s quite easy to turn the 4XX into a mini LCD2 by reducing the 7-8k peak and adding a few db to the bass).
The differnece in timbre is noticeable as well. The AKG’s have a very strident upper midrange that sounds harsh and coloured to my ears. The HifiMan‘s upper midrange is a lot more relaxed, with a bit of sizzle in the treble around 8k, with noticeably more air than the AKGs.
Damn..thats quite something..considering how expensive the akgs are compared to this. I wonder if my fiio e17k would be enough to drive these.
It should drive them adequately - I can just about run them off my iPhone 7+. I have a Fiio Mont Blanc which does the job but I highly suggest a more substantial amp and DAC to get the most out of them! Especially if the e17k has the same ‘metallic’ Fiio tonality my Mont Blanc has. I use a Universal Audio Apollo 8 for the DAC, and its headphone outs are pretty good - it sounds great through it! I would say that EQ really does reveal their potential.
Agreed. I'd say overall the power of how hard it hit is about the same. But, the HE4XX does have faster and cleaner bass, with less distortion, and better bass extension.
