The screw on one of the earcups popped out as I was putting on the headphones for literally the third time ever! Before I ever put them on I noticed that the screws on the left earcup were more recessed than those on the right, and they were asymmetrical. I managed to screw the headband back on after buying the correct hex wrench, but no matter how hard I tried both screws on the right earcup would not screw in as deeply as those on the left. And lo and behold the screw popped out again the next day as I was taking them off. This is very poor QC, and many others have had the actual piece the screw inserts into come out as well. That piece is already in the process of coming out on the other side of the right earcup my own headphones; and that is a problem that cannot be fixed. Massdrop has told me they have no replacement unit to offer me. I am, needless to say, extremely disappointed, as I am very happy with the sound and comfort and if I return them I cannot buy another pair. Has anyone had success replacing the short screws with longer ones? It seems this is a common problem.

MoonshakeYour post makes me nervous.
You think it's luck of the draw? Like some HE4XX have good QC?
I've worn mine at least 100 times now and have applied flex to lessen the head cramp and still nothing.
The screws and metal rods on both sides all seem perfectly even and one is not more recessed than the other or anything anomalous.
Should I be worried?

DogesWell so the other screws on my headphones are currently OK, and I have not had problems. I replaced the problem screw with a slightly longer one, and I have not had it pop out again. Hopefully the screw insert pieces stay put now, but the plastic badge on the right side has now has fallen off (but is easily glued back on). Anyway to answer your question, if yours seems fine then it might well be, not everyone seems to have had problems with the screws. But be gentle with the plastic badges.

MoonshakeBlue loctite is the fix. They should have done that at the factory. It’s not a defect, it’s just an omission of proper assembly techniques At the factory. Heck, one of the screws was almost 1/2 way out when I received them.

hsdrggrPlease tell us more about this blue loctite fix and where to travel to mine and extract this rare mineral, then using alchemy apply it as a fix to our 4XXs?
Please?

hsdrggrNeat, thank you!
Can I ask why you don't return them with such poor screw-popping-out QC? An experienced end user like yourself can most definitely fix it, however the average user might not have the patience nor the knowledge to do so.
Is it because they sound so damn good you cannot justify returning them?

DogesI've already cut the cable and converted it with a mini XLR connector so I can swap to balanced input. I also removed the grill screen and put some foam spacer rings between the ear foam and plastic mounting ring. I removed the screws again, cleaned them and applied blue loctite again. I also lightly oiled where the screwhead taper rubs on the earcup hanger so it reduces the friction on the screw when it pivots. I think it is good for now. If I did not have the loctite products I would have just put some super glue on the screw threads and that would have fixed it too. Also. you are correct, when connected to a sufficient portable amp they sound damn good. I have several sets of good headphones and I find myself always wanting to use these. The only other mod that I will do is ZMF ORI Suede ear pads and ZMF Pilot pad when Massdrop does another drop for them.
