RECOMMENDED MODS FOR THE HE4XX Please note: These headphones absolutely require a DAC/amp device to get the most out of their sound. With a phone, laptop, or computer the sound you hear will be lacking in clarity and dynamics. The O2 + SDAC DAC/amp would be an excellent choice for those on a budget. EQ Using a system-wide* sound modification program called Equalizer APO and the frequency response graph (on the main page) as a reference, I created an EQ profile for the HE-4XX that lowers its mid-bass through the upper-mids. Activating this profile, removes the haze in the headphones' sound, creates a wider (perceived) sound-stage, extends sub-bass, and generally increases the transparency/realism of the sound. Once installed, click on the green "+" and select 'Graphic Equalizer with variable bands'. Then copy-paste the following into the (pencil and paper) 'Edit text' bar: GraphicEQ: 42 0; 43 -0.9; 44 -1.7; 45 -2.35; 46 -2.85; 47 -3.3; 48 -3.7; 49 -4.05; 50 -4.4; 52 -5; 54 -5.5; 56 -5.9; 58 -6.25; 60 -6.55; 62 -6.8; 64 -7; 66 -7.18; 68 -7.35; 70 -7.5; 75 -7.8; 80 -8; 110 -8; 200 -7.75; 400 -7; 700 -6.5; 1000 -6.2; 2000 -5.5 Using the columns on the right side of the window (or within 'Edit text'), the frequencies/levels can be adjusted to taste. To deactivate the profile, click on the white 'profile active' button, and it will turn black. * When a profile is activated, all sounds that are played on your PC will be altered. GRILL REMOVAL To make the sound is more open and airy, remove the headphones metal grills on the back of each side. Simply snap off the plastic ring around its perimeter (notches at 1:30, 4:30, 7:30, and 10:30). Then, while holding the grill on, turn the driver/cup back-side-down and let the metal grill fall into your other hand. Be careful not to let the grill magnetize to the exposed magnet structure. This modification is precarious but easily reversible. For home use, though, feel free to try it... especially with instrumental music (film scores, classical, etc.). These two alterations offer a dramatic improvement over the 4XX's stock sound, making these already impressive cans even more so. At the very least, EQ and enjoy!

mattrisIf you don't want to remove the entire grill, you can also remove the mesh attached to the grille and pt the grill back on. Same process, similar results (aka a more open sound), but you keep the grills on.

mattris1st mod should be removing the yoke screws on each cup, then bend the yoke to the shape of the cup and replace the screws to prevent them from falling apart.
