I've read that these headphones sound good for the price but are built petty badly from the reviews here on Drop. Can someone please tell me their recent experiences with them and if the build quality is still bad or not.
The he4xx is actually pretty well constructed. The parts used are of good quality. On the other hand, quality control is spotty.
I purchased an open box he4xx off Ebay. The seller neglected to mention that the left channel cut out intermittently. However, the price was so good that I decided to keep the headphone to see if I could repair it. It turns out there was a tiny piece of paper stuck in some glue by the left input jack which was interfering with the signal.
Removing the paper fixed the problem. No more intermittent cutting out in the left channel. Some other Hifiman owners have also mentioned this problem, and
been able to remedy the situation by removing the paper stuck to glue.
I wonder how many Hifiman headphones were returned to the company simply
because of this quality control problem?
I hope this helps other he4xx (and owners of other Hifiman headphones) owners who may be experiencing the intermittent channel cut out problem.
The he4xx is a really nice sounding headphone and a steal at the current $130 price!
I got a pair from here recently. Overall construction seems pretty good so far. Only thing that bothered me was they had over-tightened the twist tie around the cables to the point where I was afraid it might have damaged them.
I love the sound, but after a few months, both earcups fell off the headband. Luckily, Drop is replacing them for me, but I'm afraid it's going to happen again and there won't be any more left to get them replaced.
