These have replaced my Porta Pros for use at home. Great with Yaxi earpads.
They also make a great gift for friends who have never tried decent headphones.

Don't underestimate these little suckers
They're fun to listen to, take EQ well, sound even better with Yaxi's, are relatively portable if you're not rough with them, got a decent sound stage, and look a little goofy in a fun way–– just get 'em. They'll make you hear your favorite records in a new, no frills kind of way.
Koss sound, slightly changed. While the koss sound in this budget range is not quite anything grand, its still a great upgrade over a lot of other competitors at this price point. Not sure if I prefer these new Utility drivers over the last generation of Portapro and KPH30 era sound though. Its all slight differences to my uncritical ear, and might be more a change in pads than anything, so if you generally are a fan of the Koss sound in that line these should do you well with the added benefit of a sort of replaceable cable. The biggest issue remains the cable not being a true full replaceable one (that plugs into the drivers).
As for the metal headband, its nice to have and very lightweight but I'd rather have thicker pads on an over the head band like this. I know a lot of people prefer this style over the portapro folding or clip-on, but for on the go I can't beat the folding portapro or clip-ons.
The flat noodle like cable they do have is still a massive improvement over the old ones and being able to change length on the end is still a useful feature. Lastly the multi color pads are a nice boon. I think I might end up replacing the headband with old clip-ons I had (these are still compatible with the headbands of the porta pro and clip-ons), or maybe throw on some yaxi pads and keep the headband.

Most comfortable headphone I own. Subbass surprisingly good! Good stage
These are my favourite headphones! I can wear them forever as they are very light and have no clamp. They take EQ pretty well and have very satisfying bass even though they are open. They don't isolate at all though but the imaging seems really good.
The utility cable is kind of annoying and I really would rather it have mmcx connectors instead. I already bought the parts to do the modification myself.
Stock pads are ok but a tad abrasive. I put Yaxi pads on it right away. Can't go wrong for the money.
Two weeks of ownership of two pairs of KOSS KPH40X (for work and home).
I didn't faced any cons of KOSS KPH40X during these two weeks.
But. These pair of headphones is very very ok for musical tracks like ABBA and very very bad for styles closer to death metal.
Works ok from FiiO BTR5 and BTR7.
Soon as I put them on they broke. Not the experience I was expecting to get.
The sound is flat, but rolls off the high end noticeably, making it sound subdued and a bit lifeless.
If they didn't snap off, I would be a happy customer as I have been looking forward to trying these for a while but the Amazon price plus shipping to the UK did make sense.
I kinda see why I should have stayed away.
Legend79The headband broke. All you need is a new headband(call KOSS immediately)… or… you can replace the broken headband parts with ear clips. They snap on/snap off.
Great audio quality, build quality leaves a lot to be desired. The wire connection lasted a few weeks before giving out, and now I only hear audio out of the left ear. This has happened to several Koss headphones I have owned, and yet I keep buying them because of the style and price points. Worth owning if you can treat them lightly.
