Well balanced sound in the sub $50
I own almost all Koss headphones in this category, Porta Pro, KSC75, KTX PRO1, KPH30i and even Radio Shack Optimus (Realistic) PRO25. Now added the KPH40x to the collection. Although they share the same driver size, each one have its own sound characteristics that makes one different from the other. The Porta Pro gives emphasis to the mid bass frequencies over mids and a little to the high frequencies. The KSC 75 cuts the sub bass and extended high frequencies to give emphasis on mid frequencies producing crystal crear voice. The KTXPro1 and Radio Shack Pro25 share the same “titanium” driver so they sound very similar to the Porta Pro with a little less bass in the lower frequencies. The Kph30i sounds similar to the KSC75 without the emphasis on mids. However the new KPH40x is a well balanced headphone. It will not go to sub bass frequencies or ultra hi extended treble but what it will do is it will give you a well balanced, unaltered sound without exaggerated emphasis on any frequency region, providing a natural sound characteristic to the music. Build quality and feel. Being a headphone made to look like a classic portable headphone of the 80’s, is no surprise it will feel like that too. The clamping force is OK but the thin metal band will be felt specially in people with little or no hair. That is not a problem but certainly you’ll always know the headphone is there. In summary, this is one of the best sounding headphone in the sub $50, maybe $100 category. Give it a try and I guarantee you won’t regret.

The KPH40 is flawless. Fingerprint-proof steel band, unbelievable sound, comfort, excellent pads, future-proofed cable that allows you to swap out lighting or usb-c... What can possibly be done to improve that? DROP dropped the price $5, and included a set of blue and a set of red pads! Offering a bunch of different looks, (with red/blue being the most obvious). Absolute win here. I personally like the Koss grey over the DROP black, but that is completely subjective.

Great headphones! Wish there were cable options...
I love these headphones. Super light and very comfortable. Only gripe is Drop should have offered a USB Cable bundle because getting them after is pretty pricey...

I was born in the 80's, I remember the old foam headphones and was slightly miffed that you could not get them anymore back in the 2005's cause everyone wanted earbuds after the IPod launched. While Koss is well known in the USA, I have not had much experience with Koss in Australia, as most of the main stores don't carry Koss products, with the exception of boutique stores. First up, yes, there is a colour transfer issue if you have red and blue foam pads installed, but, you do get a second pair, and a pair of plain black foam pads. Secondly, Discolouration and staining is old problem with foam pads, it looks like its something that science still has not figured out yet. As for the sound, The Bass has a nice level of punch to it, Treble is clean enough to get detail from your music, there is an acceptable level of sound stage, it's more intimate then expansive, but, it is there. The KPH40X weigh almost nothing, you can place them on your head and forget that they are on your head. Like all foam on ears, they are open, so there is sound leakage but the bleed is "personal space" range than the "Two feet away" that you get with openback headphones, provided that you don't have the volume up to Max, people will hear a Buzz Of The Beat and not Every Word. Personally, I will admit that I cried a little after having not only a piece of nostalgia from 18-odd years ago, but a piece of nostalgia that sounded incredible for their price

Bad Service
I ordered both the KPH40X and KSC75X. Later I got an email saying the KSC75X was out of stock so I asked to cancel it. Brett R gave me a partial refund of $12.44 instead of $20 without my approval. He refused to provide a full refund and also claimed he couldn’t just leave it on back order. The conversation then ended when he said he was the manager and permanently closed the ticket. Really, all that over $7.56?

good sound but fragile
for its price they sound fantastic. I bought two of them from drop but both are broken. It does not take much force to brake the headband and I cannot find any replacement headband.

Incredible bang for the buck
These have replaced my Porta Pros for use at home. Great with Yaxi earpads. They also make a great gift for friends who have never tried decent headphones.

Don't underestimate these little suckers
They're fun to listen to, take EQ well, sound even better with Yaxi's, are relatively portable if you're not rough with them, got a decent sound stage, and look a little goofy in a fun way–– just get 'em. They'll make you hear your favorite records in a new, no frills kind of way.

A Fantastic Budget Headphone
I already own the standard KPH30i & the clear version, both of which I adore (other reviewers will explain the differences in sound signatures between the two better than I can). The new KPH40's are a welcome addition to my Koss collection, however I do have a word of caution. I purchased the Drop version firstly because I like what Drop stands for; secondly, for the colour variation (headband) & thirdly, because it is supplied with red & blue replacement pads (I suspect these are non Koss). I originally burnt in the 40x's with the red/blue pads in place & they sounded absolutely awful. I was so baffled by the sound emanating from these headphones, that I considered giving them away, or in my more unreasonable moments, discarding them into the trash, as a faulty, out of phase set. In a final attempt to understand what was happening, I put the standard Koss black pads back on. My word, the headphones suddenly came alive & behaved more in keeping with my expectations, they now live up to all the hype. In summary, if you don't want to shed tears of frustration, do yourself a favour, don't use the red & blue pads.
