Just kind of curious what the majority's subjective preference is as far as the color to use for the BACKSLASH (\) key, either on this set, all sets, or if its a decision you make on a case by case basis. Personally my feelings are that just like the ~ key, it's a base key and not a modifier. I know that's almost a weak reason when it shouldn't matter and keycap sets are all about doing what you like personally, but something in my brain just doesn't let me treat a non-modifier as if it were a modifier even for the sake of symmetry.
As such, on all of the sets I currently own both my \ key and my ~ key are in the base colorway. Despite the lack of symmetry, I like having the uniform feel of the same colorway on the same types of keys.
I know this is kind of a random question but for a while I thought I was an outlier when it came to this but I've seen a fair number of /dev/tty sets from Round 1 use the base key rather than the modifier color chosen for the set. It makes me feel a little less crazy for my choice and maybe even some people out there follow the same thinking as I do.
So, what do you all choose for those keys and why?
I use the base alphas color for the ~` and \| keys as well. Imo, they're not modifier keys because they actually send a character on keypress.
Personally, it all depends on the aesthetics of the key sets. I generally use the same color for the base sets, but for some like “Canvas” I’ll use the mods’ color. I might do the same for the upcoming GMK Laser just to tone down the bright colors by using the dark mods instead, but for the upcoming SA Carbon I’ll go back to the base colors. Sometimes if I get bored of a set I’ll switch things around and maybe mix in keys from other sets with matching profiles before I completely change the look and feel of all my keebs.
I was about to agree with you, but then I looked down at my Jukebox and realized that I'm actually using the modifier colors. I guess I do it this way because it makes the whole board seem more symmetrical from an aesthetic standpoint, even if it is not symmetrical with regard to function.
I guess for me it’s about personal aesthetic preference and not what’s supposed to make sense. Now that my collection is growing I can now change sets to accommodate the four seasons and holidays or any festivities. I like to switch sets around so that I know I get to use all the sets I own. Eventually it will help me master using any kind of profile (SA,XDA,DSA,GMK OEM primarily). My most favorite is SA and GMK profiles so I tend to buy more of these profiles.
I always want the ~ AND \| to be modifier colored when at all possible. I think it just looks much better. I have a rule about never purchasing a two-tone key cap set that does not also include the modifier colors. Matt3o did with this set, which is great. The only reason I didn't jump on last time was that I didn't like the bold legends. Based on the alignment issues I have been seeing, I am glad I passed. I hope they get it fixed for round 2.
