Thank God drop only sells keycaps sets on trashy inferior ABS plastic. Otherwise they'd regularly get a chunk of my paycheck with each release. Reddit has ruined the mechanical keyboard market. Collectively we used to appreciate quality plastics that can survive contact with human skin. Human skin oil is an ABS solvent. The makers save like 30 cents a set using inferior plastics like ABT because they come out of the mold at a slightly higher rate without issues. Stop paying so much for inferior keycaps so the market can return to sanity.

BitvarAre you people really buying keycaps, putting them on a keyboard and hanging them on the wall? Do any of you actually USE them? I refuse to believe people not only use them intentionally but enjoy the nasty shiny mess they become after 2 weeks of regular use. Why would you spend so much on something that requires touching but touching causes rapid degredation of said thing?

Bitvar“Human skin oil is an ABS solvent.” I have seen variations of claim too many times to count, yet I have never seen anyone provide a reference.

BitvarI've been using the same set of ABS keycaps (GMK Laser r1) for *years* and they have no noticeable shine. Are y'all eating Cheetos when you use your keyboards or something?

fer.realABS is a petroleum based plastic and oil is a solvent for it. Especially fatty oils or other petroleum derived oils. This is common knowledge you should have picked up in highschool chemistry. It is only good as a structural plastic due to its strength and conformity to molds. It is highly toxic during it's heating phase too and non-biodegradable. Possibly the worst of materials to make keycaps out of. You should have paid attention in school.

sevenseacatThen you're blind, incorrect in assuming they're ABS or just simply lying.

BitvarI don't mind shine on SA or MT3 profile sets. Just not on my cherry profile sets.

BitvarWell... ABS does have more vibrant colors and is less prone to warping than PBT. So both have their pros and cons. The amount of resulting shine depends on how frequently you use your keyboard and how oily your hands are. As for your cost argument, PBT has a melting point of more than double that of ABS, thus melting said plastic costs more energy and time, ergo money. One also has to be more cautious of warping when it comes to using PBT. So it is do-able, but even more expensive than using ABS. Yes, there exist plenty of cheap PBT keycap sets, but they are not nearly as thick as GMK or MT3 caps. Thus one can assume the manufacturers saved on the cost of their base material (PBT) by using less of it. And due to the scale of production of these cheap PBT sets, the cost to make them has gone down and the profit margins have gone up. Group buys like these have limited capacity, and do not have access to the production throughput of larger manufacturers. Sure, it would be cool to see some double shot non-shinethrough PBT keycaps on the market, but the demand for them is not that high. Thus, we will primarily be seeing thick double shot ABS keycaps from smaller manufacturers for the time being until demand changes.

BitvarThis. The price also depends on the profile. I like typing on XDA keycaps, and they are uniform, so no different molds are required to produce. They cost about 25 to 45 USD in Aliexpress for 120-130ish keys. I personally had a shining ABS set over the time, which was OEM profile. I have never had this issue with PBT. Also, I have always found PBT keycaps feel better, because of the texture. ABS was the reason I passed on this keyset, because I don't want these to shine even after a decade. Also, who said GMK keycaps are better because they use ABS plastic ?

BitvarI have no issues with shine. I actually love it. And love the warm deeper sound of ABS compared to PBT.

BitvarSuch whining. You know there are hundreds if not thousands of perfectly good PBT sets out there for a whole range of prices less than MT3 or GMK if that's what you prefer. Mistel makes a very solid double-shot set for $50. Other options being available and valued highly by others does not make the market insane - it just means people like a thing you don't and have different priorities than yourself. Why complain when you could just go buy what you want, and ignore what you don't? I see a lot of that on reddit, too - I don't think reddit ruined the keyboard market - I think it's given too much shelter and encouragement to folks who love to complain. If no one preferred ABS plastic, no one would be producing with it - it's not even intended a cost-saving measure. In fact, some of the very cheapest keysets available in the world are laser-etched PBT. From a manufacturing perspective, it's easier to get consistent results with injection molding, especially with multiple shots of plastic, when using ABS vs PBT. Most "doubleshot PBT" caps are actually a blend or use a different plastic that's easier to work with for the legends. From a consumer perspective, well-made ABS keysets enjoy more consistency and precision of manufacture than PBT sets can achieve. ABS also carries color more effectively and can be colored more richly, and some folks just prefer its sound and/or feel. Neither is objectively better, so much as better suited to a given set of priorities. Depending on your priorities, one or the other will be better for your use-case. Old-man-cloud-yelling at "the market" will not reward you.

BitvarNone of my GMK sets (including one WoB set with 5 years of use) have any noticeable shine because my hands are clean. What an insufferable comment.

BitvarGuys... Just because your hands are clean or your set didn't shine won't mean everyone else's hands are dirty or their keycaps wouldn't shine. Also, shining is subjective. I personally don't like it and like to feel the texture of the keycap, and personally think it makes keycap feel cheap. My hands are sweating more than normal people, and I had two shiny keycap sets, especially on WASD keys and space bar. And no, I never consume Cheetos near my keyboard, only cups of black tea/coffee. GMK keycaps do shine: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=88337.0

https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/nif83h/my_recent_build_also_trying_a_method_to_reduce/ And people even offer service to remove the shine: https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/bksitt/service_removing_shine_from_abs_keysets/ I can understand sound being better on ABS keycaps or having more colors, but defending ABS just because your keycaps did not shine (yet) is a funny counter-argument. Yup, you guys paid extra $$ for these sets, but it was for thicker material, colors, and better quality, as long as ABS covers. 'better' is still subjective here in my opinion. Also what defines 'high grade' ? Hype? Price? In my opinion, my EnjoyPBT keycaps are the best keycaps I've used ever!
