I had really high hopes for this. Of all the sets Drop has announced over the past few months, this was the one I was waiting for. It could have been my dream set. But there's just so much wrong. The limited MT3 kitting means I'm making sacrifices from the get-go, so the rest of the set really has to be perfect. And it isn't. There's no C= logo key. The colors here are just... weird. Like I said in another post, it's like saying you're inspired by a Dasher terminal, and then making the mods yellow; nothing about this aside from the PETSCII art says "inspired by a Commodore." I don't mind in and of itself that the PETSCII is inaccurate (the ASCII on Oblivion is also wrong and never corrected), but all of this taken together - the colors, lack of a logo key, the limited kitting, the inaccuracies - means accepting too many compromises for the price. I had wanted to buy every kit I could for the most authentic retro keyboard I could build, but I think this is going to be a pass instead. I'm torn, because I really do want at least the alphas, but there's no way I could really use them without decent-looking mods. And I feel like if I keep making all these compromises when I buy from Drop, things will just never change.

I'm worried I'm coming across as a jerk or some sort of troll with my complaints today, and that's not my intent at all. This set is just frustrating to see roll out. I can understand Drop usually going the route of cheaper and less unique for most of their MT3 recolors; it probably pays off almost all the time. But if ever there was a set that deserved to be geared more towards enthusiasts, this is it. The target audience for this skews older, has fond nostalgic memories of this specific computer, and are looking for something accurate and true to the original. They're likely willing to wait months or years for new molds, and spend a premium for it, if it means doing it right. They care about the colors, the logo, and the accuracy of the legends, whereas the people who don't care about any of that probably aren't interested in this set anyway. To see all of the options from the previous runs stripped out this time around, due to the limitations of the MT3 profile, is sad.

we can't have the C= logo, but as I said multiple times, Retro is first of all full brown (with gray or yellow function keys). That is how was meant to be. Truth is... the full brown option always sold less and Drop generally plays safe. Unfortunately I have no saying in that, but they promised more options if things go well so there's still hope

matt3oSaying there is hope is just coping. If Drop were actually interested in making full brown kits if the base kit sold, they would have done it by setting a MOQ like literally every other keycap set GB does. Telling people to buy the base kit is a ploy.

Nonnegaardlet the normies buy it, if there's enough interest there might be more kits coming and then you can join if you like

The colorway seems more inspired by a ICL One Per Desk. The C64 "inspiration" seems like mostly marketing at this point.

RayndalfThat's actually pretty neat - I'd never even heard of that thing, but the colors make a lot more sense in context of it. Still, the PETSCII front-legends are straight from the C64, a popular version of which also has coffee-brown caps like the ICL there, but shaped quite similarly to MT3.

DeadeyeDaveSA Retro sets had full brown as an option as well as the maroon mods and green accents but lacked the PETSCII front printing (at least in one round?) So I guess Retro has always blended inspiration from both boards and they naturally leaned into the popularity of Commodore for marketing. While the ICL is nothing more than a stylish footnote in history but still feel like it's getting brushed under the rug.

RayndalfSA Retro did have a couple Commodore-specific novelties besides the C= logo, even though there was no PETSCII. There was "Shift Lock" instead of Caps Lock, and a Run Stop key. (I'd love to see Run Stop, Restore, Clr Home, Inst Del, and other C64-specific text novelties, but since they'd all require new molds, I don't think it's possible, sadly.)
I think anyone using the C logo without permission from... someone in the chain of ownership would be in for a bad time. https://www.nostalgianerd.com/commodore-heist/
