Was a quality sample done before the original run? If so, assuming it was accepted, did the original run not match the quality sample? If no sample was done before the original run, why not? The update seems to state that the sample and the run were delivered at the same time.

For someone building their first kb, a little bit more than slightly disappointing because I can't fiddle with another one. Can't say bye to this gorg set tho.. As a graphic designer, I can't but notice that those look nothing like the renders, the colors are off, so are the fonts even some of the symbols on the keycaps (check the > ___ )
They look like some cheap plastic due to the colors being off and different from the render even the reds, greens and others.
The fonts are bolded and look like someone made a scratch in them and then used ink to fill the gaps..
This is the single keycap set I liked and wanted to have. Ever.

ifightbearsI'm aware of the thickness and the colors discrepancies but the >_ is actually correct. If you look at the 2D mockups you'll see that the _ is a vertically misaligned with > on purpose.
I didn't render these keycaps on 3D (it was work done by a third party) so when you introduce another party these things can sadly happen. That's why nowadays I'm making 3D renders myself, to avoid these issues.
While the thickness and colors may be off, the >_ is correct. I appreciate the criticism, and patience as well. Thanks for understanding and for joining the drop in the first place. We are working hard to get it delivered, rest assured!

This happens to 90% of custom sets, renders are just renders, the final product may differ slightly from what was envisioned (imo this particular one is pretty close now with the new samples) - regarding wait times, this turn around is pretty fast, I've been waiting on Keyboard & Co for like 11 months now and they've not even gotten double shot samples off of GMK yet.
TLDR: you know what you're in for once you join, if you don't then you shouldn't have committed in the first place.

Shit happens, stuff gets delayed all the time when it comes to key caps. Sucks, but such is life.

MiToAdd me to the list of folks who don't care about delays. I get people's frustration, but this is just the reality of custom manufacturing. Even when everyone is trying to do the right thing (which is never guaranteed), details are miscommunicated, misheard or simply suffer from differing interpretations, strange things happen, and especially with color-matching, we're well in to art-not-science territory. I just love the promise of the set, and want it to be perfect.
TLDR; If I get it before I'm dead, I'll be happy. If I don't, well, I'll be dead, so there will be no 'I' to do the caring.

MiToTotally. Quality first, don't care about delays. I'm pretty sure many buyers aren't on their first sets either -- personally I've always got a couple keyboards' worth of various parts in a pipeline of delayed orders and at least one keyboard's worth at home that's waiting to be soldered until I find the time to put it together. No rush. This set's planned to liven up an old Atomic OLKB I have lying around in parts in a box.

People that are complaining about this have no clue what some of the non-Massdrop group buys have been like. This delay is hardly a blip on those time scales.

kunalkumaras someone who hoped simply to get cool looking keycaps with rams on them and some nordic caps this is pretty pathetic. how is none of this testing done before you list the drop on massdrop? why not just take the extra 2-3 months of time to get ready...before creating a drop with thousands of people invested. Sorry if I don't understand the intricacies of creating keycaps, but seriously... I appreciate the extra care going into these, as I'm sure they'll be up to stuff once they arrive, but let this be a learning lesson for massdrop. Perhaps organize the quality checks prior to creating the drop?

Also, as somebody already asked, what will happen to the (not accepted) ones in the warehouse? I would probably lift some international of your hands for a reasonable price.

kunalkumarAs has been said by a couple of people, but with a twist - I wouldn't mind paying extra for the shipping and handling to get a set of the quality control failed keys as a 'temporary' set to use on my board, before the 'final' set turns up.
You could probably pad that up a few $ to make it worthwhile and to get them off your hands and in return we get a beater set of keys. How about it?

Then some automation on the back end (that they already have in place) to spit out the list of who wants what, and a few minutes to grab the appropriate bags , job done.
I note we paid $3.75 for shipping - I'd pay another $10 to get this. That's $6.25 a set profit, essentially for nothing. Good deal for both sides.

JimmyjimjimI'd be shocked if anything like this happened. More likely they are going to sell these as seconds at a slight discount, maybe break-even cost, to avoid taking a loss. I doubt the manufacturer is just going to write them off so MD would have to pay something for them.

But then again, I've literally been on the ground in China, dealing with factories, and believe me, I wish it was that easy. You can't just just show them a render and ask them to make it in that image. They'll say 'sure, no problem' and then give you something shitty. Or, more common these days, they'll try to "improve" upon your perfect design, which usually just makes it shitty. Just making what you hand them doesn't really work at most Chinese factories. I really, really wish it did. Of course you can find other factories that are capable of reading what you're laying down and they make great product. But you pay a premium for that. And it's not really an option at this volume.
The reason I'm not more angry at this situation is that I've been there. This isn't really unusual at this volume. What separates the men from the boys is how well the client is working with the factory. I'm slightly angry that these problems weren't caught earlier. But that's the extent of what I'm angry about.

kunalkumarThese look better, but the weight is still too heavy in my opinion. The font looks like it's still bold compared to what was displayed in the renders. Also, if you look at the text modifiers, you can see the code button is a different thickness from the rest of the keycaps. Not sure if it's an old leftover that was included by mistake, or it was leftover in the source files for printing.

I wanted to provide context about what has taken place on this drop and what the next steps are for us.
What has taken place?
All keycap orders were shipped to our warehouse ready for fulfillment along with a sample sent to MiTo for a quality check. As many of you know, MiTo and the community were not satisfied with the quality of the dye sublimation work on the Canvas Keycap set, and we ended up holding back the fulfillment of the orders that were in the warehouse.
During this time Yanbo was visiting the factory in China, and he was able to secure a new production run of this drop for the community, provided that the new samples passed the quality check at MiTo’s end.
What is happening now?
As it stands right now, new samples for the Canvas set were shipped to MiTo on Monday, June 19th. I’ve attached images of some samples for the community below.
Once we get an ok on these samples from MiTo, we will do another production run of the Canvas XDA Keycap set.
What are the next steps and timelines?
We know that everyone is curious about timelines and how it will affect the drop. Provided we get the green light from MiTo on the samples, it will take the vendor 50 business days to run the entire production again for all the orders.
We are expecting to get an answer from MiTo by this coming Monday, June 26th. Once we have his feedback, I’ll be sending another update about precise dates and actions required from the community on Tuesday, June 27th.
I hope this provides more clarity to the community as to the process and the happenings in the background. Please wait for our email on June 27th where we’ll list out the precise deliverable timeline.
