I own these, Focal Elex and MrSoeakers Aeon closed back. These are amazing. The comfort can't be beat. They sound great for a closed back.
Which you prefer? AFC, Elex, CX??
Comfort I prefer the Aeon because I havea wider head and bigger ears. For both the MeSpeakers products it's like pillows on your ears. Simple amazing. Sound wise it's a matter of taste. I like the ethers the best but the election have their place as open back headphones.
One more thing I will mention and everyone should know before purchasing these. WORST headphone bags I have ever scene. I swear there was a mark or stain on it. I'll buy a case on Amazon. I would have preferred to paid another $20 to $50 and been given the option if bags or cases.
Noted, DbCoper...thanks for the feedback. We're working on some different options depending on the products.
Actually I don't mind the bag, but would have liked a smaller version for the cable too so I can keep the cable in the bag without scratching that beautiful carbon fibre, also I never got the microfibre cloth.
One side note: I got a Dummer cable to 1/4" which unscrews to a 3.5mm cable instead of a XLR end like in the photos. Which made getting the XLR adapter a tad bit confusing, but hey the headphones are sooooo comfy.
Agreed with the cable.
Wasnt it supposed to come with an XLR-4? Wasnt the first batch with the 4-Pin XLR?
Please shed some light on this.
That's what I thought but mine was the second batch and came with a xlr-4 adapter to 1/4inch to 3.5mm jack but the main cable was already a 1/4inch to 3.5mm end anyway so have no need to use the adapter.
I'll be upset if that happens with mine. I use balanced amps, and that is part of the benefit of the deal. Without it I'll have to buy a balanced cable which will run me upwards of $100. You should get what is depicted and stated you will receive in the description. Hopefully it's not a big issue for you, for me it would be. Mine should be here soon!
Mine only turned up yesterday :) It's not a massive issue for me tbh, I still need to get a 2.5mm balanced cable anyway and will probably end up having to also buy a XLR balanced cable too in the near future.
Could you please shed some light on the cable discussion?
Isnt the CX supposed to come with a 4 pin XLR?
If I check the screenshots it is clearly an XLR cable...
Also the specs say:
- Cable: DUMMER 4-pin XLR, 6'5" (2 m) long
@MatthewHillman You should have gotten a long cable with 4-pin XLR at the end. Please contact customer service so we can remedy that...a single ended cable cannot be adapted to balanced.
Yes, should be a balanced cable and a separate adapter that goes to single-ended.
You can start balanced and then adapt to single-ended but not the other way around...
Correct, should be a balanced long cable to 4-pin XLR. Please contact customer service if you receive an incorrect cable.
Thanks a lot - will do.
Another question: How come I didnt pay any additional taxes or fees and received the package within 5 days? Is this drop part of the new "EU Shipment Test"? If so, I would suggest to make it more prominent as ppl from the EU will so much appreciate this fact !!
Anyhoo, thanks a lot :)
I had to pay an extra $200 to import mine into the Uk.
Thanks @CEE_TEE i've put a message on the Massdrop support page.
Then it might not be the EU Shipment Test afterall.
Strange as I never received a shipment by UPS from MD and I always had to pay a lot.
Mine came with USPS then sat in customs until I paid, then Yodel delivered it. I had an email telling me what I needed to pay and how. Although it might be different for you if you aren't in the UK like me.
It's just luck. Sometimes it goes through Germany and it can simply pass customs. Really depends.
Your package was not part of any EU Shipment test. Just draw of luck
Lucky me then :)
Sorry for confusion ;)
between the Elex and Ether Cx, does the Elex have a punchier/more impactful bass of the two? Or vice versa?
This illustrates different tastes and needs. I never take my full size headphones out of my apartment, have no need for a bag or case, and (retired on a fixed income) welcome every penny MD or other vendors can shave from the price by omitting a case.
Neither is really what I call base cannons. Base is there but not over powering. I prefer the Ether for sound. It's more neutral of the two.
Agreed, also it really depends on what amp I use with my CX's.
However my burn-in is not finished yet...
Can you tell me whether the AFC or CX has more micro details. I'm the kind of person who likes details transmitted right to the brain but need closed backs as my setup has a refrigerator not to far away.
If I use my computer hooked up to my Chord Hugo 2 and compare the two I would give a slight edge to the CX. I now use it all the time.
Thanks man. That's the one detail people weren't talking about that I needed to know.
Now where's my credit card?
