Are these worth replacing the TH-X00 Ebony's? I want more isolation and less treble and I don't know if getting these would be worth the $400+ additional cost.
I got the ECX as an upgrade from the TH-X00 Mahogany. Assuming the Ebony sounds somewhat similar the ECX is significantly better in every aspect except for bass quantity (but the bass the ECX has is better than the X00). The ECX isolates better, is smoother across the entire frequency range, has a significantly wider sound stage, and has more precise imaging. The ECX isn't as easy to drive as the X00, but it is clearly the better headphone.
Here's to hoping they drop again. I'd live to get my hands on a pair.
The drop for these is live right now - looks like the are at 252 out of 270.
I didn't address your comment about the "less treble" in my initial response. The treble fatigue was one of the main reasons why I was looking to step up from the X00. The interesting thing about the X00 is I don't really notice the "glare" at first, but I find they got tiring to listen to over long periods. I never got that with the Ether Flow Open I already owned so I figured the Ether CX would give a similar smooth and balanced presentation - it does.
Yes. They are better than the Ebonys at isolation, mids, and highs. Bass could go either way, Ethers are better while the Ebonys are just fun. I also would say the Ethers are more comfortable for me. Mids and highs are relaxed (highs) and filled with detail in comparison to the Ebonys.
