How. Much. Wireless. When we think of wireless, we think of…no wires. Not less wires. No wires. That’s the hope and the dream. True wireless. There are some incredibly active discussions in the audiophile community with titles such as, “Going fully Wireless IEMs. Too soon? Or are we there yet?” If you‘re like me, you’ve been playing a game of wireless chicken, thinking to yourself, “The technology, sound quality, and aesthetic will get better, I should wait!” You may be waiting…instead of doing what many others seem to do:
search
Waiting for the right pair to come along before you make a move:
search
Move Forward As a company, we know that wireless is important and a big deal. We needed to get it right. We could have jumped on the true wireless bandwagon early but we waited until the category matured, working with a partner on a wireless platform to help develop the usability and sound that we would want ourselves. NuForce has been a wonderful partner on three projects, the Move is our fourth collaboration. We collaborated on many aspects of this new wireless model: sound (driver/EQ), connectivity (chipset), microphone (placement), carry case (LEDs), control sounds (new), aesthetic (sleek). A lot of samples were given back to the factory along the way or this box of prototypes would be even bigger:

Sound First Usually, the sound is the thing that keeps us up at night. Does it meet the sound target? Does a mix of the community’s best ears approve the sound? We actually locked the sound down pretty early with this project. The electronics, battery, antennae, charging contacts, microphone, weight/balance, and space were all parameters that led to a single driver design. You’re going to move in noisy environments, so clarity along with a balanced sound signature is important. Move uses Knowles full-range balanced armature drivers to achieve that sound. (An additional benefit of balanced armatures is a longer battery runtime compared to dynamic drivers.) Balanced Armature Driver Technology:

Tip For True Wireless Many wireless IEMs include very small, tiny ear tips. Use real-sized eartips. Bigger eartips = a better seal. Better seal = better bass, more secure fit, & less intrusive noise. Associated Issue: IEM charging cases may have small cavities and only fit tiny tips. With the Move: Only full-sized ear tips are included. And they fit in the charging case. Carry Case The number of LEDs lit on the front of the case = the number of IEM charges available. To see how many charges you have, simply open the lid and the lights will tell you:

DETAILS You can join and participate in the Drop + NuForce Move first production run with $90 limited time pre-order pricing for your early support, or they will be $130 at regular price. Pre-order begins on 4/29/2019 at 6:00am PT and ends on 5/29/2019 at 11:29pm PT. There is a special EU local delivery option available at check-out for this launch. Everyone at Drop is very excited for these to finally arrive. They have been hearing about them and prepping for this day along with the Collaborations Team for quite a while. We are gonna be right in line with you to get some Move!

CEE_TEEHi. Do they connect independently to the phone so you can use either side for listening. Sometimes I prefer to use one ear for work and it would get annoying on my jabra elite when I could only use the right side and runs out of battery. Thanks

CEE_TEEAfter reading Amazon reviews on the BeFree 5 and BeFree 8, my takeaway is that these reviews absolutely savaged those two products - many reports of connectivity issues between the ear buds, connectivity to phone, mediocre sound quality for speakers and microphone and low volume levels. What is being done to address these often repeated complaints? How do you think these will stack up against the Samsung Galaxy buds which are at the same price point? Thank you.
PapabehrI am sure @CEE_TEE can answer as well, but I've gotten to speak with him about this issue actually. I learned that part of WHY you see that picture with all of the samples is that they weren't satisfied with disconnects happening at all, and made changes over the life of the project to ensure that disconnects are a thing of the past! I'm definitely stoked to give them a try and see how they hold up to something like the Jabra Elites or Apple's pods, as both of those will disconnect a few times on my 2 mile walk home through the city on any given day. Neither are horrible, but neither are ever perfect either.

PapabehrHi Papabehr, These have a new chipset from anything that we have seen before...plus new drivers (Knowles), new microphones/placement, and a new design to the carry case LEDs. You'll see that these are USB-C and IPX5. Overall shape, comfort, and fit are the same however. Hope that helps!

Sjow14555Hey Sjow14555, Thanks for letting us know how you use your true wireless. The Move are set up to connect to the right side with this version, like your existing pair. In case you run out of battery and need an urgent charge, 15 minutes of charging in the case will get you 1 to 1.5 hours of runtime. (I'm thinking I will need this for the gym sometime but it may come in handy for you at work.)

CEE_TEEThat's a bummer. Inability to change which side of the IEMs are active on the fly would be the sole reason I choose not to buy this. As much as I want a better sounding Airpod, I am unwilling to sacrifice on the convenience. If you think about it, you can essentially double the battery life when listening with one ear in, and swapping only when one side runs out of battery. I think it's a valid use case, so hopefully you guys explore that some more in the future.

CEE_TEEI've been looking for some wireless earbuds but I have big ears. Like Carl from "Up" sized ears. My ears are also very hard. It takes at least a half pound to press them against my head. For these reasons I can never get earbuds to stay in if there's even remote jostling. Some I can't even look down while wearing. I see the different sized ear tips but how big are the largest ones? I also see that the body is touching your ear. How much pressure is it putting on them? If it requires any sort of deformation of my ear it's not going to be possible because of my adamantium plated caricature sized ears.

CEE_TEEAny thought to including Sony's LDAC support in addition to SBC and AAC?
PapabehrWithout aptX, aptX HD or LDAC this isn't going to get my cash either. Appears to cater to the iOS crowd, AAC is only marginally better than SBC and doesn't help if Android is your primary wireless source.

ElectronicVicesConsidering the form factor and my planned usage, I suppose AAC should be sufficient. Based on what I've read, it's comparable to higher quality MP3. I'm not one to use @pple products so I have no experience with AAC as a codec/transmission protocol. I store flac files on my phone (OnePlus 6T w/ 128GB storage), and it allows me to lock in any of the blue tooth formats, to include AAC. Note: this can be done by enabling 'Developer Options' and manually setting the bluetooth protocol. Anyways, Aptx, AptxHD and LDAC would be more important to me when streaming to my home or car stereos, or a set of larger over the ear cans versus these little buds. I was just curious about LDAC based on it being open sourced whereas Aptx is proprietary.

PapabehrListening to AAC via an Android phone is a disaster. Take a look at this study: https://www.soundguys.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-bluetooth-headphones-aac-20296/ It's not native to Android and is very battery intensive. It'll run your phone down way before the power runs out in the monitors. I'd reconsider if I were you.
PapabehrLDAC was Sony's proprietary codec but they opened it up to the market to get more foothold. It's a serious battery drain but worth it to me. I was more interested in AptX LL for these. Guess I will just have to wait a bit for the tech to mature to get what I want. I've got the ES100 and a dozen or so IEM's to hold me over in the meantime. That device weights nothing and gets double digit hours on LDAC (quality priority).

CEE_TEEseems like the sound is taken care of but how is the call quality? I know the primary focus for these would be sound but do the mics work to cancel out sound and target in on your voice? How does it sound to the receiver? Also, is there an app to accompany the headphones like other true wireless earbuds?

chfordGood article - thanks for sharing. After reading, I wanted to test the sound quality and battery effect with the AAC on my phone using my sons PowerBeats3 , but could only get SBC. Not sure if this is an @pple specific issue or whether I'd have the same issue with another manufacturer. Hopefully there will be testing done with Android phones to verify these will work with AAC and not have them drop down to SBC.

swimmer.chrisThe microphones do work even though they are away from the mouth and close to the ear. We made sure that they are suitable for calls. No App to go with the IEMs, they work out of the box without further adjustment.
CEE_TEEThank you for investigating. Last thing how does the volume control work on the actual IEM when not using a device like mobile.

ElectronicVicesSince the Moves will only have support for SBC and AAC I checked the codec support for the new Samsung Galaxy Buds and the Jabra Elite 65t . The Jabras only support the same two codecs while Samsung adds a proprietary one named 'Scalable'. While not having AptX is a bit disappointing, it seems the current level of codec support with the Moves is in line with this particular style of ear buds from some major manufacturers. If anyone can provide information on a similar style of IEMs that support additional codecs, I'd like to check that out. It would be nice to get confirmation that the AAC will actually work with Android devices though.
(Edited)
PapabehrYeah most of the "true" wireless avoid the high battery consumption codecs. Which is why I don't yet own any, I have a plantronics BT earpiece for calls and the ES100 handles my music duties with a Noble K10 attached. I didn't like BT headphones on SBC or AAC, the compression and frequency alteration is readily apparent to me.

PapabehrThe Creative Outlier Air support AptX. That's why I've been looking into them, because I own a pair of Bose that don't support AptX and they really suck at audio / video sync. That AptX support should fix that on the Outlier Airs. They're also fairly inexpensive but I haven't used them so I don't know about their sound quality. https://us.creative.com/p/headphones-headsets/creative-outlier-air?gclid=CjwKCAjwqqrmBRAAEiwAdpDXtMsYJovucr-CqKdza_r1KlAtSRxrJr3ORWJiDE0wXgURiwk_-J--fBoCmsMQAvD_BwE
silverthornneI don't see mention of AptX LL but vanilla AptX is certainly a start. AptX comes in three flavors that I know of, OG AptX, AptX LL (low latency for streaming video or gaming) and AptX HD, roughly CD quality or higher bit rate (still a lossy codec though). LDAC destroys them all IMO but that is most certainly a battery hog on both sending and receiving device... and still not "lossless" although has sufficient bit rate to reproduce 96kHz content with minimal loss.

CEE_TEESooo... if I want to put it into pairing mode but hold the button for literally one second too long, I’ll power off the unit? Doesn’t seem very well thought out. Or is it just a typo in the chart and “right/left” actually means right AND left?

DiminishedSeventhWe've got an unobtrusive sound file to let you know you got to pairing mode and you can let go. You'll hear the beeping and let go plus see the LEDs.
CEE_TEEThanks for the response. We’ll see how it goes once I get it. May be more of a minor annoyance than anything. My Shure BT2s go into pairing mode if you hold the button too long when you’re powering on. I thought it would be a minor annoyance but it bugs the crap out of me every time it happens because then it doesn’t auto connect to the source and I have to power down and power up completely again.
(Edited)
Brandon123Oh I see the value for lots of people and use cases... just not me/mine. To replace a piece of my existing portable gear it would have to tick more boxes. My audio sources run from 192kbps local MP3 to spotify and tidal, as well as redbook and high resolution lossless local files. Video streaming from several sources are also at play when on the road for work.

CEE_TEECan “standard” three-flange ear tips fit these, especially in the charging case? Those have been about the only tips that provide near-sufficient isolation. No hear-through (like Jabra 65t has) is a BIG design flaw.

JeskoMy ES100 lived for 26 days and then died. I’m glad too to be honest as it never lived up to the hype for me, it’s possible I had a faulty one from the start though and that’s why it lasted so short of time. The Mpow receiver/transmitter honestly sounds a huge amount better for a fifth of the price.

boingyboingyHi there- sorry to hear you are having issues with the left earpiece. There are a couple of ways that the left side can be delayed and not connect but once you know how they behave it should be great: SET-UP:
https://docs.drop.com/NuForce_Move-First_Time_Using_Move.pdf

USING MOVE:
https://docs.drop.com/NuForce_Move-Troubleshooting_Guide.pdf
CEE_TEEI, too, had that problem... and re-read all the instructions. Nothing worked. The left just randomly worked, and mostly didn’t. i gave up and tossed these into a drawer as a big mistake.
FearlessleaderI’m trying them again... mostly working this time. Yes, I had previously done all the resets before. Who knows why, but it’s better now. Two “gripes”, though: getting then out of the case at nearly the same time is tough; getting them into your ears always ends up pushing the button (either/both ears) making the device start playing.
