OOL: I'm missing something. The Alt-high profile is $180 (rn), the pandas are $85 for 70, a case is $25, and the samurai keycaps are $100. Why the extra cost? What am I missing? (390 vs ~500) -- even for the extra cost of changing keycaps and adding stabilizers, I still lost the original keycaps that would come on the ALT (right?).

Math_HappyI'd say the lubing, building and proper foam dampening does warrant tacking on a good premium, I'm not sure it quantifies to a $110 USD price increase. For my first build, Lubing the stabilizers alone took me an hour half to learn and figure out (I can do it now in 15 minutes), lubing switches took me over 8 hours the first time (still extremely lengthy nowadays, at around 6 hours to do a 75% board properly), and finally soldering took me about an 2 hours (nowadays, I'm much more efficient at around 30 minutes). I also added a dampening material to my first build but my cut job was shoddy and I never did it again." If I base it off my noob-self hours, thats 11 hours of labour (not including testing for errors and programming) to get the board working. $10/hr is not too bad if you think about it that way, but of course, if you can do all that yourself and dont mind the time, or you can do it much faster, then I would say its better to do this all on your own.

rawrjauIt's a hot-swap board, too. So soldering and programming, since it's QMK out the box, are taken care of. $110 is going purely to dampening and lubing.

sdwaterHand lubing them yourself is usually better most of the time though, you don't know if the switches you receive are going to be consistent or not. We also don't know what kind of lubricant is being used either and that could change the feel of the switches dramatically. Dampening of a board is very easy to do, you can go to a local store and grab packaging foam or aka PE foam for quite cheap as well. $110 for those is quite stupid actually.
