Announcing the DROP + Sennheiser HD 8XX.
This headphone is the result of hundreds of thousands of community posts and four years of collaboration between the teams at DROP and Sennheiser.
Analyzing discussions around the HD 800S, we saw clear mandates from the community around bass extension and midrange balance. The HD 8XX incorporates two novel changes to accommodate those mandates.
Where the HD 800S uses a single resonator in front of the driver, Sennheiser created a new resonator system for the HD 8XX, enabling bass extension down to 10hz (+5db @ 10hz vs 800 S) by changing the resonant properties of the housing.
Sennheiser’s team, lead by Jermo Koehnke, reached the bass solution pretty quickly, but our goals for the midrange proved demanding... bordering impossible. After significant research, Sennheiser reached a solution; altered acoustic impedance in the transducer's dampening material to smooth the FR from 2.5k to 8k.
This means the transducer in the HD 8XX is unique, it’s a new ring driver.
Launch pricing for the HD 8XX is $1100 and you’ll receive $200 worth of drop points (20,000 points) with purchase.
For future units, HD 8XX pricing will increase to $1200+.
This is a pre-order, so you can cancel any time between now and shipping, and this product qualifies for Drop Studio 30 day satisfaction returns, so if you don’t like the sound in November, you can send it back for a full refund.

WillHow does the increased treble and further 1.5k drop effect the imaging and stage of the cans vs the 800s?

Take a look at the hearing sensitivity curve to get an idea for the impact of the 1.5khz dip. You want a dip there to avoid being too high energy given the higher sensitivity of hearing in that area.

Thanks for clearing this up. I hope to see a clearer indication of how this might impact the sound in the coming days, because to a layman like myself I mainly see a big change.

WillHi Will! Any chance there were physical adjustments to the headband or clamping force? I didn't get the 800S because they just wobbled everywhere on my head.

WillThe Drop+Sennheiser 8xx Headphones were already a great headphone and with these specialized custom changes they are truly going to be an #Awesome headphone if not the best in their class.
Another great collaboration between Drop & Sennheiser.
I have Stage 4 cancer so I’m going to spin the wheel of luck and pre-order a pair, hopefully I’ll be around to enjoy them in November.
Once they reach the point where some are being released for the review stage, I look forward to seeing and hearing what the pros have to share about them.

WillI see that the HD 650 doesn't have the same kind of recess around 1500. Is there something specific about the HD 8XX tuning that makes this difference especially desirable? Granted, I see a few different curves for perceived human hearing going around, but it's a plausible enough reason.

I’m not saying that they absolutely don’t offer it or that nobody is able to get any sort of customer service out of them, that would be BLATANTLY illegal and they’d be sued into the ground, I’m talking about the vast vast majority, including me 😄.
Do you think Sears or Kmart flat out screwed everyone? No, they selectively did it until they went out of business, mark my words Drop if they continue like this are going out like Sears. I’ve predicted many companies fate by observing their customer culture.
