StealthbushidoFind the HD800s on sale given Sennheiser has just shed itself of its consumer headphones division. The frequency graph is near identical other than a bit lower bass and unfortunately slightly raised midrange anyway.
Or save up for the Hifiman Arya which has better bass from the start and very similar characteristics otherwise.

StealthbushidoI agree with @SquirrelPorridge you can find used HD 800s for under a grand. People usually take good care of them but you can always swap the headband and pads.
