*Disclaimer, Drop loaned me a preproduction model of the 8XX for a few days. No cash or payment of any kind was exchanged. The unit I have, from what I am told, has the final version of the sound, though cosmetically, is identical to the HD800S.*  This is my first -written- review of any product, so bear with me here… Many questions to cover! How does it sound? Is it worth the price? Does it compete with HD800S? Did drop butcher your favorite headphone? I cannot tackle everything, so I will try to get to the heavy hitters.   Overall impressions: Positive! 8XX is a breath of fresh air, similar to its predecessors. It prioritizes clarity, sparkle, and positioning above most else.    Details - Well, still, after all the headphones I have reviewed, this headphone can still impress me. Sometimes presence and tangibility of something is just on the next level. Song: For those that follow - Annihilation Soundtrack. The subtle binaural mouth noises and humming make me shudder with what feels like a warm tickle on my ear. Honestly it feels gross, but I cannot deny it’s impressive haha. For a more technical showcase though, I might suggest “Fluid” by Yosi Horikawa.  Treble - Well, oddly, this is probably the area that most detractors of the 800 series had issues with. I think sennheiser and drop had a big opportunity to address this area to soak up some of the cynics and give everyone a version of the 800 series to enjoy. Sadly, this is one area of this headphone they seemingly left largely unchanged. Similar peaks and dips as laid out by head-fi’s graphs. Listening impressions align, but it feels very much like the same picture.  Tonality - Still has that ever so slightly metallic tonality up top. A little unnatural for some instruments, but also perfect for others! Strings can be some of the most enjoyable you’ve heard with the right recording - The Lion King Orchestra Suite (LIVE) - The World of Hans Zimmer, Long after you're gone  - Chris Jones (I know, this one deserves an eye roll for being the most overused audiophile song of all time, but it does sound fantastic on this)  Midrange - This is perhaps the most interesting area of this new design. A fresh take on a richer midrange in the 800 saga.
  • Tonality, better actually. I feel this is a bit more natural through most male vocalists with less heat applied. A phenomenal song for testing here is “Devotional” by Sivert Hoyem. This song has layers and layers of tones, textures and nuances that few male recordings have. Giving me hard Chris Jones flashbacks. Female voices are also benefited, but not as much and can still sometimes feel a little far away, but also a bit shouty from time to time.
  • On a side note, If you are into vocals above any other aspect in music, I would recommend a 6XX instead of this.
Bass - A slight improvement over the 800S, but still not a bassy headphone, which for the purpose of the 8XX is kind of a good thing. I am not sure exactly what the difference in resonators are between this and 800S, but the bass does have a different attack between the two. The 800s sounds a little bit more distorted to me and almost “loose”. 8XX cleans this up a bit and hits a little bit harder under 30-40 hz, but is largely the same through the midbass.  Imaging and Staging - Of course it’s world class. Anything even breathing the same air as an HD800 is going to have both imaging and soundstaging that competes with the best of them, this being no exception. BUT! It has a specific flavor of staging. Instruments have a concrete like placement in the stage, with loads of room to breath between spaces. This headphone does lack a bit of a “height” factor to the soundstaging, like you might get with some planars, like an Arya.(you knew I would bring it up at some point). What I mean by this, is an orchestra on an 8XX largely feels like it’s playing on a horizontal plane, rather than sounding like it’s coming from the basement and the rafters.    EQ - Well, the bones of the HD8XX driver is the same as the 800S, and it seems to EQ to about the same amount. Pretty wide variability and control over what comes out, but, not some infinitely manipulatable sound. Small corrections to problem areas however, it responds to well.   Gaming - Hardcore Audiophiles might scoff at this part a bit, but everyone has their own use case for headphones, and part of my testing always includes a bit of gaming. I have been claiming for years that the 800S is the very best gaming headphone. The 8XX is now an equal to that headphone for gaming in my book. If you are one of them crazy gamer kids looking for the very best headphone exclusively for games (especially competitive shooters), I would look no further than this. To set some expectations. What I mean by the best, is when looking at this as a tool, not a fun having device. The bass is a little light for immersive explosions. This stands out for it’s god tier representation of player placement with sound. In some games, it’s like having wall hacks with your ears. That is what I mean by the best. As a tool, not as a toy. (reading this last part back, it sounds so dramatic… but hopefully you get my point)  Comparisons -  VS HD 800 S - HD8XX subbass is stronger, but not by much. Lower midrange "body" is a little beefier, but upper midrange "body" is a little muffled. Treble is largely the same with no major notable changes to my ear. Maybe a small change here and there, but it could easily be unit variance. Placement and positioning of soundstage also feels identical with the exception of voices being a tiny bit larger on 8XX, feeling a hair more present. Overall, it sounds like an 800s. If I put mine down for 2 weeks and you swapped it, I probably would not notice until I compared it to each other. Win for 8XX! VS HD800 (OG) - HAHAHAHA - Just get this. It is better. -Basically- an upgrade to the 800s for 500 cheaper. If you were considering it, now is the time, the used market for 800 is so good right now.  Conclusions - In the end, through all the comparisons and explanations, one thing is still very clear about the 8XX: It’s STILL, in 2021, a UNIQUE sound signature. Nothing really sounds quite like the 800 series, love it or hate it. Beyerdynamic had the opportunity to swoop in and scoop up this market with the T1 Gen 3, but really failed to deliver on any improvement over the Gen 2. So here we are, for this type of sound, the 800 series stands alone. Right now, it appears your options are 800S now or 8XX in a few months and save $500 for a good amplifier, like a THX 789 or Topping A90 or, idk, buy some GME or BTC lol. (last consideration - If you get a balanced amp, this does not come with a balanced cable, so factor that into your cost analysis).  So, is it worth the price if you are willing to wait? I have exactly the same reservations for the 8XX that I did the 800s. I also have largely the same compliments. If the sound signature appeals to you, I do think this is a good value, especially with the early bird perks.  PS. Excuse any brevity errors.

JoshuaValourThanks for the preview/review! I was hoping for more of a change on the low-end, damn :| I'm guessing the HD8XX would have weaker bass than my TH-600 then? Maybe I oughta just go for a D7200 or the TH-900mk2

JoshuaValourLove your videos, Joshua. I had already watched your video review on the HD8XX, but I'm glad I found this written review, as well, because I took away some additional points from it. Maybe you should do more written reviews as supplements to your videos? Just a suggestion. Didn't mind (and actually liked) the fast-paced, getting to the "heavy hitters" nature of this written review. Thanks!

JoshuaValourThanks, basically getting a HD800S will be a better deal with the inclusion of the balanced cable and proper warranty. The moment they get the 8XX to 800 USD or so then grab my money. Those 200 USD as credit, I'm not sure anything worthy will come.

BigFurno, did you watch the video or read the review? lol he said the opposite of what you did: the 8XX is a better deal if you have neither. If you have the HD800 (OG), the 8XX is a noticeable upgrade. If you already have the 800S, the 8XX is a slight downgrade. The 800S is a better headphone and costs more. Nobody said anything about the inclusion of a balanced cable (pentaconn, not xlr). When will the 8XX be $800? It's going to go UP in price (from $1100 - $1200) after the pre-order period ends. I'm not chaffed, mate: I just want to make sure you actually understand what Josh really said so you can make an informed decision.

JoshuaValourI'm a bit confused by this statement:  VS HD800 (OG) - HAHAHAHA - Just get this. It is better. -Basically- an upgrade to the 800s for 500 cheaper. If you were considering it, now is the time, the used market for 800 is so good right now.  Is this referring to the HD800(OG) or the HD8XX?

danny87I assumed this is referring to HD 8XX. Mainly because I do not think Joshua considers HD 800 to be an upgrade to the HD 800S. To me, he considers HD 8XX kind of an upgrade to HD 800S "for 500 cheaper". But he then follows it up with a comment on buying used HD 800 (if one specifically wants HD 800 and not HD 800S or HD 8XX). That is separate from the previous assessment. It is admittedly not entirely clear.

Yog-SothothI think what he's saying is that the used market for the 800(S) is really good right now, so if you already own a HD800 (OG), you should sell it, and pick up the 8XX instead. Based on Josh's preferences and reviews, I can't imagine a world where he'd suggest buying an OG HD800

RayFBy golly, ladies and gentlemen. We found one. A self-aware wolf in the wild. As he wanders around with 50 different watches that has different movements and use cases, he finally wonders why people in a different hobby would purchase different headphones with varying sound signatures. Maybe he'll soon realize that it's a niche luxury item like the watches he buys. Or maybe he'll stay unaware. Oh darn, he's run off again to chase some cats. ---- It's different use cases for different headphones. In terms of watches, just because I have a dive watch doesn't mean I don't also want a casual or dress watch. A dress watch may not have lume, might not be as water resistant, and may not have a rotating bezel that dive watches have. Does that mean that people shouldn't buy dress or casual watches since dive watches tell time just as well and has added functions? No, people still want Grand Seiko Spring Drives and Omega Speedmasters. They look sexy AF. Those spring drives do something funny to me. Similarly, if people want better detail retrieval and larger soundstage on the HD800 series, just let them.

RayFIt appears that motorad is not commenting on your comment, but replying to someone who is replying to your comment. His comment indicates that he cannot see your comment, but can see someone replying to your comment. His comment does seem to indicate that he is able to correctly ascertain the useless and self serving drivel you posted. Since that's all you ever post it's not that hard to figure out. It's also not hard to figure out that a self congratulatory twit like yourself has been endorsing his own comments since day one. Come to think of it, blocking useless aholes like you is a great idea! hahaha 🚫 Blocked.

DROPNEVERSHIPONTIMEOkay, interesting points to make. Here's my rebuttal: 1. I've said this before and I'll say it again. A person's "points" or endorsement on Drop means nothing because there's no possible down vote. It means that if 50 people disagree with RayF's opinions but one person like you who doesn't understand the context but decides to support him solely based on the fact that he has more points decides to up vote him, he'll continue to accumulate more points until he hits a million or more. 2. Calling him a self aware wolf is more or less calling him a hypocrite, in simpler terms. It's the idea that he sees nothing wrong with buying multiple watches, but advocates that there's no justification for buying a pair of headphones that have different qualities than ones you may already have. EDIT: I changed this part out as I saw he reposted his original comment and was able to review it again. For reference, my original comment was something along the lines of "It's the idea that he sees nothing wrong with buying multiple watches, but advocates that you only need one headphone that does everything slightly better than average." He did not say this and it was an honest mistake on my part. 3. RayF's hidden comments weren't golden nuggets of peaceful debate. While his first comment has some "insightful" criticisms, the latter portion of his comment insinuates that anyone interested in the HD8XX has mass hysteria. After calling him a self aware wolf, he goes on to call me a whack job and the site a whack job forum because his feelings got hurt over comparing his hobby of collecting watches to headphones. Another comment of his that got hidden was where he stated the one of the person who argued against him was a duplicate account of someone else who argued against him. That's my recollection of the events but it could be skewed due to my personal bias.

RayFYep, I do acknowledge that I misremembered part of your initial comment. I had edited my comment after realizing that you had posted a copy of your thoughts below and had a chance to reread it. I think it's now more in line with my first comment as well. My view on the endorsement or the "up vote" situation is just due to how DROPNEVERSHIPSONTIME worded their comment. I'm not a fan of people using points to determine if a person's opinion should have higher priority which does turn it into a numbers contest.

BlackInkGenerally you don’t want headphones with a wide soundstage for gaming because the audio engine will attempt to mimic positional audio for a speaker setup (or headphones without enhanced soundstage). The H800S is the exact opposite of that. It will still work, but positional cues might be a bit odd.

JoshuaValourHi Josh, hope you catch this as I'm definitely late in spotting this review. First I would like to tip off my hat to you for mentioning gamers. It is precisely the reason why I want the 800S and figured I should go for the 8XX given the lower price. I agreed with your soundstage build (tagged as the $2,000 build) of pairing these with a Monolith THX DAC/AMP, the one with the Dirac. My question is during your testing, what did you pair these with? Will I still be able to get the most out of these through a single ended when I use the DAC/AMP you recommended in your video? I worry because I once heard that to get the most out of the 800s, and consequently the 8XX I assume is that you need to be able to at least get 600mw at 300 ohms. That's achievable with the Monolith but only with a XLR 4 pin. If you could please recommend a replacement cable if one is necessary please feel free to drop one. Thanks!

GL1TCH3DNot really. There’s speaker setting, which assumes flat, front facing drivers, and headphones setting, which assumes the drivers are to the sides. The tuning and position of the 800 drivers on the head alter the characteristics of the sound from the beginning, which is why they sound like they have a “wide” soundstage even though that information is not encoded into music normally.
