Hey everyone, Just wanted to let you all know that the bulk shipment of HD8XX's are scheduled to arrive at our warehouse tomorrow, Friday Sept 17th. Upon arrival our team will work quickly to receive, repack, and ship all individual units as quickly as possible. We're hoping to get all pre-orders shipped out by early next week, and in-stock sales will start shortly after that. We have heard the comments and concerns revolving around a couple recent reviews of the HD8XX, but our internal and community tuning team is happy with the state of the headphone and the way it sounds. We know impressions are important to the community when making purchasing decisions and actively encourage youtubers, bloggers, etc. to write honest opinions about how our products sound to their own ears. Preferences are subjective and we expect to get a range of opinions. We look forward to hearing your own in the coming days. And lastly, just a quick final reminder that all HD8XX purchases are covered by our 30-day hassle free return policy. If you're unhappy for whatever reason then you can return your headphones within 30 days of receiving it for a refund so long as there isn't any physical damage to the headphones. Update: it's 4:30PM EST on Friday the 17th and our the Sennheiser delivery has not arrived at our warehouse yet. It's looking unlikely that it'll come today, and they're probably going to reschedule for Monday. I will provide more updates as we get them. We're very disappointed since we had extra warehouse staff booked to come in on the weekend to get these turned around. (Edited for clarity)

Thanks, man. They're my first drones, and I'm totally in love. So many photographic and videographic opportunities. Because I didn't like the previous Phantom format, I had to wait long years for the smaller ones to come out with acceptable image quality. You have nice drones, too, ha-ha! Did you take the TRUST? I took it on the Embry-Riddle website. I printed both the registration and certificate and have them in my Mini's case inside a sandwich zipper bag. I feel you. I live in Puerto Rico, super close to San Juan, so I only have a bit of 400 feet zone over a lake and the beach, and then 300, 200, and no-fly zones all in less than two miles due to Ft. Buchanan and other state government agencies. I live right on the literal border of the LAANC area, too. Besides the beach and lake, I can leisure walk for a mile to the only appropriate, open flying area in the suburb and take off 80 measly feet away from the invisible border, so it's never a fun, RECREATIONAL experience. 😒 So, if I want to fly at night, which is rare but sometimes I want to, I can't anywhere unless I get on my car and drive at least two miles left of the border to the local running track's parking lot. Controlled or uncontrolled airspace, it's nerve-racking to fly in this area. I mean, police birds even spawn out of nowhere at under 200 feet of altitude ANYWHERE at any time of the day. No visual or aural warning. Seems almost like a universal prank or something. I see them on the map on the Aloft app, but they still seem to pop pur of nowhere randomly. Nothing, and suddenly, cops doing low flybys in a seeming hurry, looking for something/someone on the ground. Enough about me. What amps do you have and do you mean a local library?

Hey Friends,  When we collaborate with brands, we often use X’s to replace some digits in the model number. This started with the Massdrop x AKG K7XX, and it’s meant to say this headphone is the logical conclusion of that product line.  In February, we hit our goals from a measurements perspective, but our subjective evaluation, and those in our community validation process aligned to the same conclusion: the 8XX didn’t sound like a logical conclusion for the HD 8 series, it sounded like something between the 800 and 800S. We achieved a 2.5db bass increase from the 800S, but because of the cavernous earcups and resonant characteristics of the housing, subjective impressions were too close to the original. Cup volume doesn’t have the same diffuse effect on mids and highs, but beyond the light bass, we were still wrestling with the 5-6k resonance, unable to eliminate it.  Given all of that, we returned to Sennheiser and continued to iterate on tunings with Jermo and his team. After several rounds, we arrived at the final 8XX tuning, pictured below.
search
On this measurement, you can see a ~5db bass increase over the 800S from 20-600hz, followed by an increase in the highs to maintain the aggressive detail we all need from an HD8 series headphone.  FR is important, but resonance and distortion are equally important to overall tonal balance. See the CSD below, this is the final HD8XX tuning. We have dramatically reduced the resonance of the 8XX compared to 800 S and original 800, especially around the troublesome 5-6k region that so many in the community have modified their headphones to tame:
search
The tuning, reduction in 6khz resonance, and decreased distortion of the 8XX are achieved via changes to the damping scheme of the housing and changes to the driver.  Overall, we have resolved all issues, and created the logical conclusion of the HD800 series. The HD8XX is the best dynamic headphone in the world for the money.  It’s probably the best headphone in the world for the money, period.   But in the immortal words of Lavar Burton: “You don’t have to take my word for it”: review embargo ends in an hour (10am PST). Only a couple people have review units right now, but we’re shipping more in the weeks ahead.  Also, Senn has agreed to offer post-warranty repair services for the HD8XX via service centers in the US. We're pushing to see if they'll support other countries, but INTL customers should expect to pay for shipping to and from the US if they want an out-of-warranty repair. EDIT: https://drop.com/buy/drop-sennheiser-hd-8xx-headphones/talk/2843477?utm_source=linkshare&referer=R6FTNP See this post for latest shipping update 9/16/21 A huge thanks to everyone who supported this project. This headphone wouldn’t exist without your pre-orders, and the headphone community would be worse off. You made this real for the community and we cannot wait to ship.

This is a real pain for me, but I have to cancel my pre-order. I was really excited for the HD8XX. But there are quite a few negative reviews out now. Many of them complaining about the HD8XX's tuning. And there is no response from the Drop team.

The 800S only sold for $1400, and it contains a XLR cable which is valued at $300 I think, why bother buy this 8XX special version without XLR cable. There is no discount here.

Thank you, Drop, for crafting a logistical space in manufacturing that mere individuals, alone, could not achieve. For taste: I "Over Ear Can." For else: I "In Ear Monitor." For taste, I'm excited to receive my HD 8XX; for else, I'll continue to enjoy my CIEMs. For all: I amp THX AAA 789. Keep up the good work!

Can someone please help me understand what tape was applied to the driver to tune the 8xx sound? What kind of tape was used? Isn't there a possibility that tape would degrade over time? It seems like a very crude thing to do to correct a tuning problem.

It may be some type of acoustic damping material. Personally, I would not be worried about it failing over time. Sennheiser has used other adhesive backed materials in the past to tune the sound. For example, HD558. Though that appears to be a different material form the images shown. Though, I too would like to know more about the material. Good question.

It could be something like carbon tape, which is chemically inert yet remains pliable across many temperatures. I forget what adhesive carbon tape uses, but it is fairly difficult to get off without using solvents.

Maybe I'm not understanding something, but the two main complaints I hear about the HD800S is the lack of low end bass and occasional piercing treble. Judging from the graphs, it appears they accomplished fixing this with the HD8XX. Did they just go too far on the tuning based on that premise, or something else?

In terms of low-end bass extension, seems like they were able to improve this by just a bit, but not to the extent where it made any significant difference. With respect to the 6k treble spike, on the graphs it may appear that they managed to lower this by just a bit, but audio perception is relative - the feedback has been that the midrange scoop actually ended up accentuating the treble spike in comparison. And all this at the cost of a gaping hole in the midrange - like amputating a leg to fix the limp.

Please, look my post below yours. Better to listen once than explain it. in Link 1, there is a demo between different headphones (start from 01:48). This sound demo includes HD800, but make it even more simple: Lets say (roughly) new tuning of HD8XX sounds like Ultrasone Edition 12 on this demo. Listen via yours headphone. Do you like the sound of Ultrasone Edition12? The majority of community wants HD8XX sound more like Beyer T1 (on this demo) with less treble, but not like Ultrasone Edition 12. Regards, Kim

SOUND DEMO Regarding to HD8XX new Tuning!!!!!!!!!!! Hi dear HD8XX lovers. As the most of you I was in the same boat. Have preordered the HD8XX and after the silent last minute Drop's tuning have canceled the order. I have HD800S on hand and enough gears and experience to realize the differences and flaws of HD800/800S. They were not perfect, but enjoyable to listen. But what Drop has done is not enjoyable at all !!!!! Let me explain and better to listen buy yourself for clear understanding. Links are provided As an intensive HD800 /800S(now) user, I can hear the hollow (tunnel) sound alteration already on the base model, due to 6kHZ pick and low 2kHz region discrepancy. It is very obvious and you can listen here (from 01:48): Link 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXD6wFEpYeA You can take this video as reference for HD800. And now you can hear even more pronounced tunnel sound on demo HD800 vs HD8XX Link 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RfdCDBGgH0&t=0s I am not going deep to details why Drop decided to go this direction of tuning. But at least, you can hear by yourself what is all about and do your own opinion. Hope, these two demos will help. PS. Just wanna point your attention to drum plate percussion in the second video (first half). When HD800 clearly reveals the drum stick hit and after the second impact from the plate pedal, while HD8XX reproduces it like one single sound. Regards, Kim

This is a not my video. It is Crinacle's one. Even on demo it is clear that something wrong with HD8XX. I have my HD800S since 2012, ( before that 2 years with HD800). I new my 800S so well as using headphone 12-16 hours a day. Have done graphs before on my unit and exactly know what I want to improve with translation to the number on the graph. But the sad point, that a lot of people don't understand that few other things like: mufflness and bloated mid bass can not be removed by EQ or any hardware or software. But I am more disappointed with 1-3kHz area, look how far it from Harman curve, where the all vocal magic happens. Even my expensive tube Cayin HA-6A won't be able to improve this 2kHz deep And I am listening mostly blues and jazz female vocals an jazz instrumentals. For gamers it is disaster too (because of tunnel effect they can not point the enemy precisely) Lets see more reviews soon.

I don't think HD8XX has a changes in driver (too expensive for small and old production line). My guess it is more driver suspension. I have seen the prototype of new resonator with bigger hole. Seems like they applied in the middle donate/paper mod too (not sure). But interestedly, the resonator on HD800S was carefully calculated by Sennheiser to micrones, because of the whole purpose to create a secondary distortion to compensate the 6kHz pick and give a presence of more mid bass. But remember it is secondary/ resonated sound which gives more bass feeling in HD800S. They have increased the resonance even more, which gives a more (but not clean = bloated) bass feeling. Plus closed ports gives you effect less treble, but less revealing details too (Josh V tried to explain it in his video as contrast filter effect), Yes we have now more warmer headphone, but warmth is not due to increased mids. It has been done by all degradation of clarity in all spectrum from high to low bass. That is why you have more bass now, but it is dirty bass (filtered, resonated, muffeled, bleeding to the mids, all over etc). I have a big collection of headphones (look under my profile) and almost all of them have been modified, Some quite heavily. And I know from a practical experience about headphone tuning. Regards, Kim

A few thoughts that have been on my mind about all of this.
  1. Some of you all need to calm down. Drop's letting you cancel whenever and even return these if you try them and just don't like them. That's a pretty darn good low risk proposition. Drop is not perfect, but as a company with a non-traditional model, I think they have a lot to offer. They've brought many products to the market that never would've existed without them. I've bought a lot of things from Drop that I've been very happy with, and some that I was more luke-warm about. I have never felt that they were trying to scam me, lie to me, or pull a fast one on me. There's a big difference between poor execution and maliciousness. Unless they refuse to honor their return policy, I have no reason to doubt their intentions. Let's not be so up in arms decrying something most of us haven't heard.
  2. Audio is very subjective. We all have different taste and you are unlikely to have the exact same taste as any one reviewer. Measurements can give a some point of comparison, but they are not cross-comparable. Drop's measurement system and Crinicle's/DMS's aren't the same, nor are they likely to be normalized exactly the same way. So don't freak out just because you saw a graph. Honestly, most of us are not quite as good at reading an FR graph as we pretend to be. If you don't like it return it, but if you are going to try it, keep an open mind and don't let all of the sour-ness around here ruin the headphone before you even listen to it. The internet is a dangerous echo chamber. Don't get sucked into it without forming your own individual point of view.
  3. Lastly, if you haven't realized it, some commenter's in this thread clearly have an axe to grind with Drop. They contribute nothing to the conversation but negativity. It would be best to ignore the blowhard trolls who are just trying to ruin the fun for everyone else.

I actually like the subtle blue accent ring of the 8XX, but I am concerned about resale value down the line (both from the tuning and buyer sentiment). The 800s is held in high regards so the resale value is stable.

Such a shame :( I was genuinely excited for the HD8XX. But in light of the extreme toxicity around here, I'm out. This is supposed to be a fun hobby! and I got plenty of great headphones including the original HD800. No reason to get involved with this cesspool. Thank you for warning us that you received the final HD8XX production units. Shipping early next week... (Sigh) I understand why you want to rush these out as soon as possible. I had just enough time to cancel my pre-order.
