Immediately noticed the fidelity of this unit. It is crystal clear and has a nice three dimensional sound to it. Similar to what I would get with a decent class A amplifier, however, even better IMO. I read people comparing the JDS Atom to this, all I can say is the Atom does not hold a candle to it. Not even close. Also, I notice little to no ear fatigue listening with this amplifier.
Would recommend to a friend.
Can you describe the staging / 3D sound properties of the atom compared to the AAA 789?
Sure, I feel as though the Atom is more of a two dimensional wall compared to the 789. With the 789 it feels like my HD6XX's are driven better, sound seems to "pop" more. Funny thing is the 789 seemed "quiet" to me at first, but it was the sheer cleanliness of the signal that was tricking my mind.
My all-in-one unit that I use as preamp and headphone amp is more powerful than the 789, it can do about 1.2W into the 80ohm Elex, and has 10V RMS. The 789 would be about 800 mw single ended and apparently closer to 5V RMS.
However I am sure this headphone amp, part of a $300 product (from 2010), is lacking in terms of stage and imaging. I hope I'm right but am fully prepared to not see much difference.
