Announced at CES 2018, the Drop + THX Achromatic Audio Amplifier (THX AAA™) 789 is a linear bipolar amplifier with feed-forward error correction. It’s designed for objectivists who appreciate an incredibly clean, transparent amp—the sought-after “wire with gain” whose amplification is wholly uncolored by a sound of its own Read More
Although I’m sure there are many happy people with this amp. The build quality lead me to question if this was a good fit for my sometimes rugged lifestyle. I tend to bring gear with me on holiday and the power button felt questionable. Leading me to dig and buy something a bit more durable.
This is the little amp that could, it has handly powered everything I've thrown at it and keeps on punching! The price for features and quality are near impossible to beat!
Shipment to Australia was quick, the amp works wonderfully as promised. Has enough juice for any hungry pair of cans and is gentle enough for any sensitive iem. Wonderful amp and amazing for the price.
I bought the 789 to accompany my twice-the-price tube amp and allow me to switch between them using a schiit sys. I was expecting to sometimes want the tube sound and sometimes want the solid state. But the 789 is so clean there's no reason to use the tubes, which is high praise. The noise floor is great, the output sound is great, the interface is simple and the power button is on the front (so important) I think it's an absolute no brainer.
Its a good clean neutral amp, affordable, however it tends to sound too cold on certain tracks. Imho, it lacks the warmth you hear from an amp like a Jotunheim. Classical orchestral music is perfect and clean and you appreciate this, but 80's and 90's pop or rock music isn't for this amp, the highs sound too dry. Maybe EDM, or a more bass kind of music. The amp is really good, but can be too flat for certain type of music.
So I wanted to get an amp which would improve my audio experience (I was on jds atom amp). I ordered 789 but I had my doubts, I even tried to cancel my order but I was late, it had already shipped and ... I love it. It's clear, neutral and powers all the headphones, headsets and iems I have, giving them the right amount of power.
This right here is a surgically clean headphone amp. No color, just pure sound. If you want to hear records exactly as they were recorded this is the amp for you. It's almost brutal how precise it is. Highly recommend!
