I was looking for a DAC with balanced outs...can't find one for under $800. There's your next project massdrop, fill that market gap!

Yeah, but i don't want to pay for an amplifier twice. All I'd want is a standalone DAC, but for some reason those seem more expensive than DAC/Amp Combos.

This is the cheapest DAC with Balanced outputs I can find so far that doesn't also have an amp.

I understand that you would rather save the money instead of paying for a dac+amp when all you need is a dac, but I don't understand why that means you can't spend less than $800 on a dac/amp combo that provides what you're asking for. In any case, this THX amp doesn't seem to be a symmetric balanced design anyway, so I'm not sure why a balanced dac is even desirable here.

I recently got the Integra DTC-9.8 for about $200. It retailed for $1600 in 2008, but they go for around $150-400 used online. You can pass it an HDMI, coax, or TOSLINK signal and it will output to 8 balanced XLR outputs using an individual DAC for each. I bought it to use with my JBL LSR305s and it has been phenomenal. https://hometheaterhifi.com/reviews/receiver-processor/processors/a-secrets-surround-sound-processor-review/

I never said it was worthwhile. OP just said they don't exist under $800.

I'm pretty sure the m9 isn't balanced. Also, I understand there are Dac/amps with balanced outputs, but i've had trouble finding just dacs with no amp.

The M9 is balanced, I just don't think it has XLR output specifically. But the DX7 measures so well.... that you might as well get one and use a second Amp too. That's what I have done. Or wait for the D50 which is dual ES9038Q2M but I don't think it has balanced output (XLR).

The TEAC UD-501 or UD-503 should fit your requirements. We just had the UD-501 here recently too.

Hi Will, any additional information you would be willing to share? Will it have an AES3 input? What DAC chip will it use? Can we expect to get it before we receive the THX amp?

AES3-input would be very welcome, yes. And focus on measured performance, to match this "objectivist" amp. No extra bells-and-whistles please. Just raw performance!
