#1: Wire with gain! Me want. #2: The photo shows them with the Sennheiser 6xx headphones. The 600 would be more appropriate for a truly linear amp or, to stick with Massdrop, the AKG K7xx. Why put a warm headphone with enhanced bass on a linear amp?

Because they want to advertise / sell their 6xx model most likely.

Probably for those who appreciate the tuning of the 6XX? :) Dunno, to me it still makes more sense than to get a non-linear amp just to make a set of non-linear headphones sound - well - more linear. This way it'll be more flexible and accepting of different headphones. It'll be easier to discern one's preferences based off graphs of headphones frequency response measurements as well

1) As to why the picture? Because that design may be the most recognizable headphone in all of Hi-Fi.
2) Why listen to them? Because a truly linear amplifier will allow the character of any headphones to be the feature of the system. It's why people own more than a single pair and use them at different times and for different applications. The character of the headphone is part of the fun. Sure people have a favorite sound signature but why be limited to only one?
